Description

The  Brachyscome Fresco Candy is a particularly compact and floriferous variety of Brachycome, with large flowers for the genus. Not very hardy, therefore cultivated as an annual in most of our regions, this small plant with a very long flowering period works wonders in flower pots and hanging baskets. Its flowers, similar to small daisies in a fuchsia pink will also be appreciated for brightening up borders throughout the season. The Brachycome prefers a warm and sunny location. It requires a fertile and well-drained soil and tolerates drought fairly well, when planted in the ground.

The Brachycome Fresco Candy is a plant from the large family of Asteraceae. One of its ancestors, the Brachyscome multifida, is a herbaceous plant native to Australia. In nature, this species is found on dry, shallow or rocky soils. Theoretically perennial, this plant only lives for two years, but its rapid growth allows it to be cultivated in our climates as an annual. The 'Fresco Candy' variety forms a high and wide flowering mound of 30 cm (12in). It is floriferous and early, and also stands out for its more intense colouration and increased size of its heads. The flowering is renewed from May-June to October. The flower heads resemble asters or daisies, measuring 3-4 cm (1-2in), and are borne on slender stems emerging from medium green-gray foliage, divided into segments.

The brachyscomes grow very quickly, are floriferous and require little maintenance. Not demanding in terms of water, they are particularly suitable for container gardening, hanging baskets, rockeries or summer beds. They happily coexist with other annuals such as blue Lobelia, Bacopa and Diascia, allowing for multiple colour combinations.

An ecological asset: Throughout summer, the nectar-rich flowers of Brachycome 'Fresco Candy' attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. A great way to improve the ecosystem of your garden and promote the production of fruits and vegetables in your vegetable patch.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered conditions (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your brachycomes in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (brachycomes tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant them in a sunny position. They need a light and humus-rich soil, not too chalky, but above all well-draining. In the ground, they tolerate occasional drought, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. In a pot, they will need to be watered regularly. They perish in soil that is constantly waterlogged. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are greedy. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors before the first cold weather, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter.
