Description

The Calibrachoa 'Almond Blossom' is a vigorous and very floriferous variety, particularly suitable for hanging baskets and containers. It offers a long and generous flowering season from late spring until the first frosts, with soft tones ranging from white to pale pink, highlighted by a bright pink eye in the centre. Its cushion-like arrangement adds volume to summer displays and pleasantly lines garden pathways. Resistant to bad weather, but not to frost, this annual prefers well-drained soil with neutral substrates, as well as a full sun position (it also tolerates partial shade).

Calibrachoas bear a striking resemblance to miniature Petunias. In fact, they are often referred to as mini-petunias. They originally both belonged to the same genus. It was only at the end of the 20th century, after further studies revealed various differences, that they were separated into two distinct genera: Petunias and Calibrachoas.

'Noa Almond Blossom' is a cultivar that quickly forms a plump and compact clump, reaching a height of 20 to 25 cm (8-10 in) and a circumference of 30 to 40 cm (1 ft-1 ft 4"), with a rather flexible habit rather than truly trailing. Its numerous branched stems are covered with small lanceolate and fuzzy green leaves measuring about 1 cm (0.4 in). From June onwards, a wave of flowers will cover the entire surface of this cushion. Multiple tubular corollas with five lobes measuring 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter, will then bloom successively until autumn. Their base colour is a beautiful soft pale pink, accentuated by lovely dark pink lines that extend from a yellow heart towards the outer edges.

Native to America, Calibrachoas are sensitive to frost and cannot withstand temperatures below -5°C (23 °F). They tolerate temporary periods of drought, receive rain without damage, and appreciate regular fertilisation. They require minimal maintenance, apart from regular but moderate watering: they do not like excessive moisture.

The Calibrachoa 'Noa Almond Blossom' brings sweetness and romance to the summer. Mixed with Nemesias, Diascias, and foliage plants like Glechoma Dappled Light, it will provide floriferous pots with soft colours. If you prefer a contrasting effect, pair it with Ipomoea 'Sweet Heart purple'. Don't forget the front of flowerbeds and create a multicoloured palette with the numerous available shades among Calibrachoas.

Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your 'Noa Almond Blossom' Calibrachoas in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last frosts have passed. To keep them waiting, you can pre-cultivate them in pots or buckets in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Similarly, you can place them directly in your flowerbeds or pots and keep them protected from frost. Make sure to expose them to the sun and water them during this waiting period.

Plant your Calibrachoas in a sunny location protected from the wind. They need a light and humus-bearing, but above all, well-drained soil. Do not over-water them at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excessive moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. You can remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period, but new flowers cause the old ones to fall off. The work is therefore greatly reduced.
