Description

Calibrachoa Lia 'Spark Pink' is an early and floriferous variety of mini petunia. It bears large funnel-shaped pink flowers that are almost fuchsia in the centre, warmed by a yellow heart. This tireless annual is covered in flowers from spring until the first frost, forming a rounded and dense clump. The stems' nodes are short, resulting in more flowers, and the plant continues to bloom even as the days shorten. With low water requirements, resistance to rain, and almost no maintenance needs, it is ideal for hanging baskets, where its delicate dark green foliage cascades like a curtain. It is also perfect in sunny borders.

Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells, are tender perennials often grown as annuals. They are very similar to petunias but differ in some morphological characteristics: their flowers are smaller, their growth habit is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, their development is less significant, and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids in this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and are likely descended from an Argentine species known as Petunia integrifolia.

This variety quickly forms a clump that is wider than it is tall, reaching a height of 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) and a diameter of 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in). Its long and flexible stems are covered with small lanceolate, evergreen, fuzzy, and slightly sticky dark green leaves that beautifully enhance its pink flowers with a fuchsia-purple halo, touched with yellow at the centre. This tireless flowering period lasts from May until the first frost. An abundance of trumpet-shaped flowers bloom in the axils of the leaves, measuring 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) wide and covering the faded flowers that fall off on their own.

Calibrachoa Lia 'Spark Pink' has vigorous growth and early flowering. It is ideal for hanging baskets, containers, or pots. Its heat and drought tolerance means it can be grown in the ground, where it forms beautiful borders and spots of intense colour in flower beds. Its colourful flowering means it can be planted on its own in containers on a balcony or patio. However, you can also have fun combining it with varieties in purple, pink, or yellow, echoing its own colours. It can also be grown in a conservatory. The combination with verbena, petunias, double bacopas, and nemesias is remarkable. Grow them as annuals or bring them indoors during winter.

Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant them in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Calibrachoas will flower from May to October. Plant in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, but above all, well-drained soil. Do not over-water them at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excessive moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for petunias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking their best and extend the flowering period.
