Description

The Calibrachoa Superbells Unique Lavender completes a very homogeneous series of mini-petunias, developed for its resistance to root rot, compact and ramified dome habit, excellent tolerance of various soil types, and of course the intense and varied colours of its blooms. Unique Lavender is remarkable for its countless fresh, funnel-shaped flowers that display clear lavender blue tones, shaded with a violet halo surrounding a small golden yellow heart. This generous annual plant will flower until the frosts in hanging baskets and containers as long as it is regularly watered!

Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells, are frost-tender perennial plants often grown as annuals. Very close to petunias, they differ in the number of chromosomes that make up their genetic heritage and some morphological characteristics; their flowers are smaller, their vegetation is shrub-like or herbaceous with woody stems, their growth is less significant. and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and probably descend from an Argentinian species called Petunia integrifolia. The 'Superbells Unique' series was recently developed in Japan.

The 'Superbells Unique Lavender' variety quickly forms a dense, wider than tall mound 25 to 35 cm (10 in - 1 ft 2") in height and 40 to 50 cm (1 ft 4" to 1 ft 8") in diameter. Its hairy stems are densely covered along their entire length with lanceolate, persistent, velvety and slightly sticky small leaves, of a medium green colour. The tireless flowering takes place from June until the first frosts. Numerous funnel-shaped flowers are born in the axils of the leaves; they are 4 to 6 cm (1.6 - 2.2 in) wide, with a delicate texture that reveals fine purplish vessels through a light lavender blue corolla. The colours are enhanced by a small purple central circle around a bright yellow heart. The plant shows good resistance to root rot in moist soil. Unlike Petunias, these Calibrachoas do not need to be pruned during the season.

The Calibrachoa 'Superbells Unique Lavender' is ideal in hanging baskets, containers or pots, but its heat and drought tolerance, adaptability to slightly acidic or limestone soils, as well as its vigour also allow it to be used in the ground, where it can form very pretty borders and intense spots of colour in flowerbeds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by 2 or 3 other varieties with matching colours (bright pink, golden yellow, purple), in tubs, flower pots, planters on terraces, balconies, or patios. They are also good plants for verandas. Their combination with Euphorbia Diamond Frost, Lobularia Snow Princess, Verbenas, Surfinia Petunias, double bacopas and nemesias, and even ipomoeas with dark foliage can be stunning. The choice is vast and allows free rein to the imagination and tastes of every gardener, even the inexperienced ones.

Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Superbells Unique calibrachoas in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Calibrachoas will flower from June to October. Plant your Calibrachoas in a sunny location protected from the wind. They need a light and humus-bearing, but above all, well-drained soil. Do not over-water them at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excessive moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
