Description

x Petchoa BeautiCal Bordeaux is part of a recent line of hybrids that combine the qualities of petunias and calibrachoas (Million Bells). It is a compact plant with a semi-spreading habit. It blooms early in the season and lasts for months, bearing beautiful fiery red funnel-shaped flowers with a dark throat. It is more water-efficient than traditional petunias, resistant to rain, and almost maintenance-free. It is perfect in borders, patios, or balconies.

x Petchoa are recent horticultural hybrids resulting from cross-breeding between petunias and calibrachoa. They are tender perennials often grown as annuals. Very similar to each other, these two types of plants differ in some morphological characteristics: calibrachoa flowers are smaller, their growth habit is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, their development is less significant, and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes), and likely descend from an Argentine species called Petunia integrifolia. The improved BeautiCal series stands out with its compact habit, large flowers, and good resistance to diseases, weather, and heat.

The BeautiCal Bordeaux variety quickly forms a dense clump, slightly wider than tall, reaching 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) in height and 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) in diameter. Its flexible stems are covered with small, lanceolate, evergreen, velvety, non-sticky dark green leaves that beautifully enhance its flowering.  The single, velvety red flowers are adorned with discreet brown veins that converge towards the nearly black throat. The tireless flowering takes place from May until the first frost. The flowers measure 5 to 6cm (2in) in diameter and abundantly bloom in the axils of the leaves, covering the faded flowers that naturally fall off without remaining attached to the foliage.

BeautiCal Bordeaux is ideal for hanging baskets, planters, or containers. Its heat resistance and excellent flower endurance in rainy conditions make it perfect for creating beautiful borders in sunny flower beds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by two other varieties with complementary colours (Caramel Yellow, Cinnamon, Pearl White), in troughs, flower pots, and planters on a patio or balcony. They are also good conservatory plants. They look wonderful with verbenas, lobelias, morning glories, and nemophila. The choice is vast, providing plenty of opportunity for every gardener to explore their imagination.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frost is passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your BeautiCal petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, in soil enriched with compost, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. They will flower from May-June to October. Plant them in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich soil that is well-draining. They are sensitive to stagnant water. Do not water them too much at the beginning of their growth as they are sometimes sensitive to excess moisture. They are quite economical with water, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather.

They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season.

You can remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep the plant looking neat and encourage new blooms.
