Description

The Cosmos in this 'Cantate' selection are annual plants of medium size, extremely floriferous from May to October. Particularly branched, they bear in umbels, throughout the height of the plant, large and magnificent flowers with pleated corollas of white, pastel pink or carmine red-pink. The sturdy stems are covered with decorative dark green fennel-like foliage. These cosmos fit in everywhere, bringing charm and poetry to borders, wild flower beds, meadows or pots.

The 'Cantate' Cosmos are considered superior to the varieties in the 'Sonata' series due to the excellent branching of their vegetation: each plant forms like a small bush covered with flowers. This is one of the many cultivars derived from Cosmos bipinnatus, a successful annual plant. Related to Dahlias, Cosmos belong to the Asteraceae family. They have the characteristic capitulum flowerheads. This selection brings together three varieties: 'Cantate Carmine', with carmine flowers, 'Cantate Pink', of soft pink, and 'Cantate White', with pure white corollas. They measure 10 cm (3.9 in) in diameter and are composed of a collar of slightly pleated petals or ligules surrounding a small golden-yellow center. Each plant has particularly fine foliage, known as pinnatisect andreminiscent of fennel, it is slightly and pleasantly fragrant. These medium-sized varieties, with sturdy and branched stems, quickly form a dense clump of 60-70 cm (23.6 - 27.6 in) in height, about 30 cm (11.8 in) wide. Flowering begins in May and lasts until October, only ceasing with the first frost. The flowers attract many insects and butterflies, including the Monarch.

Able to fill a flowerpot by themselves from summer until the frost, or to colonise a bank or flowerbed, Cosmos 'Cantate' offers an abundance of large, simple flowers of childlike appeal, in a very fresh color. Cantate cosmos are flowers made for beginners and almost impossible to fail. They bring density to flower beds and lightness to heavier perennial blooms, without bending in bad weather. They are used in country-style decorations, mixed with linaria and nigella, baptisias, grasses like Stipa tenuifolia, Buenos Aires verbena, or among perennials that love the sun as much as they do, such as bidens and rudbeckias. Install them in pots on the terrace or balcony. Their flowers have a very good vase life.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Cosmos 'Cantate' loves the sun and is easy to grow, even in degraded soil. Place in a moderately fertile, moist but well-drained neutral soil. Plant in the garden as soon as the risk of frost has passed, for blooms from May to October.

Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem when transplanting to encourage branching of the stems and the production of numerous flowers. Cosmos prefer full sun but tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought-resistant once established. They are not very susceptible to diseases but can be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous sowings are frequent but not always faithful, and without becoming invasive. Remove faded blooms to prolong flowering. Water regularly in case of prolonged drought and mulch if necessary to protect from drying out.
