Description

Gazania Big Kiss White Flame forms large daisies of 12 cm (4.7 in) in diameter. They display orange outer florets striped with carmine or white-pink, striped with garnet red, depending on the plants. These delicate and frugal perennials are exceptional due to the duration of their flowering - from May to October - and the striking beauty of their flower clusters. To be grown as an annual plant, in the sun, in well-drained soil, either in the ground or in pots.

The Gazania is a plant of the Asteraceae family present throughout tropical and southern Africa. It is a fast-growing perennial, cultivated as an annual in Europe. Gazania Big Kiss White Flame forms a tuft of 30 cm (11.8 in) in all directions, offering dense rosettes of non-lobed, leathery leaves, medium green with a gray-silver underside. From May to October, short stems appear, each carrying a solitary and terminal inflorescence. The flowers reach an average diameter of 12 cm (4.7 in). Each one displays a double row of externally ligulate florets arranged in a staggered pattern, with a very contrasting wide median stripe; the orange flowers are striped with carmine red, becoming almost black at the base, while the white-pink flowers are adorned with garnet red at the base. The very tubular central florets give a velvety appearance to the central disc, amber to yellow ochre, surrounded by a fine garnet contour in the 'rose' variety. Note that the gazania flowers only open in full sun.

This Gazania Big Kiss White Flame mix should be scattered in small groups alongside well-drained borders or on a sunny mound, in combination with taller, monochrome plants such as small grasses (Stipa, carex), garden irises or cinerarias. They enhance dry slopes as they emphasize their contours. They are perfect in containers under a veranda, in basins or pots that will adorn a patio. Beginner or busy gardeners will appreciate them for their beauty as well as their simplicity. They are not fussy about soil type as long as it is well-drained, and they withstand long periods of drought.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Resilient plants, gazanias easily self-seed in the most unexpected places, including gravel paths or limestone areas. They tolerate intense heat, drought, and poor soils. In summer, even a little rain or a small amount of watering during prolonged drought will revive flowering. Plant in well-drained, even rocky or sandy soil, in full sun. These plants do not tolerate standing water. In cooler climates, the plants will be grown as annuals in open ground or in pots that will be stored during winter to keep them for several years.
