Description

Gerbera jamesonii is an extremely popular tender perennial, excellent for cutting. 'T&M Mixed' F2 displays magnificent, large 15 cm blooms in a wide range of bright colours from May to August.

Gerbera jamesonii, sometimes called Transvaal or African daisy, is a fast growing and early flowering perennial belonging to the Asteraceae family, native to South Africa. 'T&M Mixed' F2 brings together plants with an erect habit (40 cm tall and 30 cm wide), producing basal rosettes of deeply lobed lanceolate leaves. The flowerheads (capitulum) appear on long stems in a very varied mix of colours including white, pale blush white, yellow, orange, deep pink and coral red.

Transvaal daisies enjoy a sunny position and rich, well-drained soils. They are easy to grow but have a poor frost tolerance which is why they are often grown in pots or containers and overwintered indoors. They are also popular house plants. With their elegant simplicity and remarkable vase life, Gerbera jamesonii combine well with roses, Peruvian lilies and snapdragons.

Planting and care

Sow from January to March on the surface of good quality sowing mix and firm down gently. Don’t cover the seeds as they require plenty of light to germinate. Place in a propagator, polythene bag, or near a radiator and keep at a temperature of 18 to 24°C. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until germination (15 to 25 days). When the young plants are strong enough to be handled, transplant them into individual pots or containers. Gradually harden them off and plant them out once all risk of frost is over. Space the plants 40 cm apart in fertile, well-drained soil and full sun. Gerbera seeds are very fine, take care not to lose them when opening the seed packet!
