Description

The Impatiens SunPatiens Vigorous Orange improved is a brand new hybrid variety of large size, remarkable in every way. Vigorous, disease-resistant, and tolerant of both sun and shade, it is covered in large flowers of beautiful pure orange that open against a backdrop of dark green foliage. These exceptional qualities are combined with excellent floribundity, from late spring until the first frost. This frost-tender perennial plant will be grown as an annual, ideally in a sunny flower bed, or planted en masse with other varieties from the Sunpatiens series. It is also a very attractive plant for summer compositions and flower pots.

Impatiens SunPatiens Vigorous Orange is a hybrid cultivar of the Balsaminaceae family, among others, derived from Impatiens hawkeri, a botanical species native to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Sunpatiens plants grow quickly and are grown as annuals in our climates. They have been selected in the U.S.A. for their ability to tolerate full sun exposure, their resistance to powdery mildew, their floribundity, and their increased vigour.

'Vigorous Orange' develops from a strong stump into an upright tuft with sturdy stems, a bushy and spreading habit, reaching a minimum height of 80cm (32in), with a diameter of 70cm (28in). It is a highly floriferous Impatiens that blooms from June until the first frost in October. It has large, single cup-shaped flowers in orange, with a spur. Its finely toothed, pointed oval leaves are dark green.

Impatiens Sunpatiens Vigorous Orange is more disease-resistant than the classic Impatiens. It works well in flower beds or large borders mixed with different shades, adding charm and elegance. It can also be grown indoors as a perennial. In this case, it should be pruned in spring to encourage new growth. Sunpatiens is also a pollution-fighting plant and lowers the surrounding temperature. In 2006, this plant received three gold medals at Euroflora in Italy for best selection, best Impatiens, and best bedding plant.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The Sunpatiens Vigorous Orange Impatiens is easy to grow. It should be placed in full sun or partial shade. Plant it in the ground in spring from March to May, after the last frost, as the Impatiens cannot tolerate frost, for flowering from June until the first frost in October. To accelerate its growth, pre-cultivate it in a pot in a warm and bright place. Place the Impatiens in a fresh, well-drained soil rich in humus. Water it generously, but be careful not to overwater. Pruning is not necessary. It is highly floriferous and has rapid growth, so it is hungry. Feed it with a liquid fertilizer for container plants once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep it looking beautiful and extend the flowering period. Be careful to protect it from slugs, which enjoy their young leaves, but otherwise, Sunpatiens Impatiens is resistant to diseases.
