Description

Impatiens SunPatiens 'Vigorous Scarlet' brings the intense magenta pink-red colour that was missing from this excellent series of hybrids. Of beautiful stature, vigorous, disease-resistant, and tolerant of both sun and shade, this variety is covered with large flowers that open in abundance on beautiful dark green foliage. These exceptional qualities are combined with excellent floribundity, from late spring until the first frost. This frost-tender perennial plant will be grown as an annual, ideally in a sunny border, or planted en masse mixed with other varieties from the Sunpatiens series. It is also a very beautiful plant for summer compositions and flower pots.

Impatiens SunPatiens 'Vigorous Scarlet' is a hybrid cultivar from the Balsaminaceae family, derived from, among others, the Impatiens hawkeri, a botanical species native to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Sunpatiens plants grow quickly and are grown as annuals in our climates. They have been selected in the U.S.A for their ability to tolerate full sun exposure, their resistance to powdery mildew, their floribundity, and their increased vigour.

'Vigorous Scarlet' develops from a strong stump into an erect clump with sturdy stems, a bushy and spreading habit, with a minimum height of 80cm (32in) and a diameter of 70cm (28in). It is a very floriferous Impatiens that blooms from June until the first frost in October. It has large, single, cup-shaped flowers, in a very bright red colour with hints of pink and a spur. Its finely toothed, pointed oval leaves are a beautiful dark green.

Impatiens Sunpatiens 'Vigorous Scarlet' is more disease-resistant than the classic Impatiens. It works well in borders or large mixed borders, adding charm and elegance. It is a plant that can be grown indoors as a perennial. In this case, it should be pruned in spring to promote new growth. Sunpatiens is also a purifying plant and lowers the surrounding temperature. This plant received three gold medals in 2006 at Euroflora in Italy for best selection, best Impatiens, and best bedding plant.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Sunpatiens 'Vigorous Scarlet' is easy to grow. It should be placed in full sun or partial shade. Plant it in the soil in spring, from March to May, after the last frost as Sunpatiens does not tolerate frost, for a flowering period from June until the first frost in October. To accelerate its growth, pre-cultivate it in a pot in a warm and bright location. Place Sunpatiens in a fresh, well-drained soil that is rich in humus. Water it generously, but be careful not to overwater. Pruning is not necessary. Very floriferous and fast-growing, it is a hungry plant. Feed it with a liquid fertilizer for container plants once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to maintain a beautiful appearance and prolong flowering. Be careful to protect it from slugs that enjoy their young leaves, but otherwise, Sunpatiens is resistant to diseases.
