Description

Pelargonium Ville de Dresden is a round and trailing plant that resembles a veil woven with small single flowers, in a delicate combination of white and pale-pink. The flowers are carried by sturdy and graceful stems, and continuously bloom from May to November. Its compact and trailing habit, resistance to weather conditions, and ease of maintenance make this plant the king of balconies. Mix different colours to create sumptuous displays in hanging baskets or containers.

Ivy geraniums are derived, among others, from Pelargonium peltatum, a plant from the Geraniaceae family native to the coast of the Cape Province in South Africa. This species forms trailing or spreading stems. Its foliage resembles that of ivy. The hybrids we know as ivy geraniums show the same trailing habit and increased floriferousness. The variety 'Ville de Dresden' grows rapidly with compact vegetation, forming a round and trailing clump, 20cm (8in) tall. It is composed of numerous flexible stems adorned with bright green five-lobed foliage. The slightly fleshy and aromatic leaves are peltate and circular. The remarkably long and abundant flowering takes place from May to the first frost. The single flowers are composed of 5 narrow petals. The two upper petals are fused at the base. They are white and pale-pink, maculated with dark pink and veined with purple. The three smaller lower petals are pure white. The delicacy of their patterns is appreciated up close, while the overall effect forms a white and pink cloud.

Ivy geraniums are generous and undemanding plants, ideal for pots or flower beds in front of the house. They will decorate the garden for much of the year. They cascade from hanging baskets and balconies. Their flowers create round and colourful masses that blend together or highlight other plants, whether trailing like the black or purple-leaved morning glories (Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace, Ipomoea Sweet Heart 'Purple') or upright like zonal geraniums, petunias, gauras, or fuchsias. The variety 'Ville de Dresden' brings lightness and brightness to flower compositions, tempering and harmonising the vibrant colours of its neighbours.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors, once the risk of frost has definitely passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your ivy geraniums in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth.

Geraniums will flower from June to October. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shady location, sheltered from the wind. They need light, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Geraniums are sensitive to frost (minimum -2°C (28.4°F)).

These floriferous and fast-growing plants are hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid geranium fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season.

Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
