Description

Petunia Amarena Twist bears beautiful white-blue double flowers uniquely marbled in pink-violet. The flowers are all different, but retain their beautiful purple blush despite the sun and rain. The flowers bloom throughout summer, creating a rounded and trailing mass that is spectacular in hanging baskets. This brand-new petunia is a vigorous plant with an unprecedented colour that will bring something unique to patios and balconies.

Petunias belong to the Solanaceae family. They are closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example. Their foliage contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and are all native to the warm regions of South America.

The recently obtained Petunia Amarena Twist produces an abundance of consistently double flowers whose unique colour does not fade. It forms a dense, rounded and trailing tuft, with furry and ramified stems that reach up to 30cm (12in) in height and then trail down to 50 to 60cm (20 to 24in), without the plant hollowing in the centre. This variety flowers for 6 months if it is regularly supplied with water and fertiliser. Its flowers are about 6cm (2in) in diameter, 100% double, and randomly marbled and spotted with varying shades of pink-violet on an almost white background, washed with blue and mauve. They bloom on dense foliage. The small, hairy, ovate, and pointed leaves have entire edges and a dark green colour. The plant is healthy. This variety requires very little maintenance: simply remove faded flowers regularly.

No other flowering annual plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias rival geraniums in the splendour and length of their flowering, as demonstrated by this Amarena Twist variety. Plant it in large pots of light colours, or in hanging baskets, with varieties of white, mauve, purple, blue or pink petunias. You can also plant it in flower beds, to punctuate borders of plants with grey or white foliage such as cerastiums, cinerarias, or artemisias. Also, combine it in large flower compositions with oxalis, clovers, white bacopas or bidens with delicate flowers, and large clumps of Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather.

They are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season.

Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep the plant looking neat and extend the flowering period.
