The mini plugs were perfect but my potting completely failed this year. This may be due to the freshness of May 2024 and too much water!

Description

Petunia Designer Cappucino is part of an innovative hybrid family, a series of highly floriferous cultivars characterised by large flowers marked with unique patterns. In 'Cappucino', the single flowers are a rare white-cream colour with beautiful coffee-coloured veins that extend into a wide throat of the same colour. The plant forms a rounded and compact mound that blooms until October in containers and hanging baskets. This easy-going annual quickly makes a big impact on the terrace or balcony, especially with pink petunias.

Hybrid petunias all originate from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. The 'Designer Cappuccino' Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family, and is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. This variety quickly forms a dense, ball-shaped mound, about 30 cm (12in) in all directions, with a naturally neat appearance. The plant is in bloom from May to October, provided it is well-watered and regularly fed. Its funnel-shaped flowers are large with wavy edges. They are tightly packed together on dense and healthy, dark green foliage. The hairy leaves have entire edges and are vigorous and healthy.

No other flowering annual plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders over such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival pelargoniums in terms of splendour and duration of flowering, as demonstrated by this 'Designer Cappucino' variety. Plant it in large pots or hanging baskets for stunning results. It will create a pleasant contrast with pink or blue petunias. You can also plant it in borders of grey-leaved plants such as caryopteris, cineraria maritima, or artemisia. If you want it to stand out, plant several to create an original ground cover at the foot of plants such as Nepeta faassenii or pink annual poppies.

Note: Please be aware that plug plants are products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Designer Cappuccino petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed, they will tolerate a light late frost. In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Petunias will bloom from June to October. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shaded location, sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-drained soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of vegetation as they are sensitive to excess humidity. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
