Description

Petunia Supertunia 'Pink Star' forms wonderful cascades of single, fresh flowers with an elegant pink star pattern on a white and pale pink background. This bushy and gracefully trailing annual plant blooms from late spring to autumn, unaffected by heat and bad weather. This particularly generous annual plant requires full sun, fertiliser, and regular watering to flourish. Plant it in your containers and hanging baskets, but also in the garden where it forms wonderful and very floriferous ground covers.

Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and all originate from the warm regions of South America. Petunia Supertunia is a sterile hybrid petunia dating from 2006, with a trailing and weeping habit, which makes it a magnificent plant in hanging baskets. It also stands out for its beautiful and very long flowering.

Petunia Supertunia 'Pink Star' forms a dense and well-trailing clump of 30 cm (12in) high that plunges in cascades of 60 cm (24in), or even 80 cm (32in) by the end of the season. The plant is in bloom from June to October, until the first frosts, provided it is regularly fed, and watered during prolonged dry periods. Its medium-sized, cup-shaped flowers are 5 cm (2in) wide, white and pale pink, with pink-purple veins that dive into a rose-purple throat. They are tightly packed together on long downy stems, hiding dense, vigorous and healthy foliage. The greyish-green, ovate and pointed, hairy leaves have entire edges. This variety withstands bad weather and heat well, and its faded flowers fall off spontaneously, without the need for deadheading.

No other flowering annual plant has been the subject of such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival pelargoniums in splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this 'Supertunia Pink Star' variety. Plant it in large pots, containers, or hanging baskets, alone or mixed with a blue or pink surfinia, a purple-leaved Ipomoea (I.Sweet Heart Purple), or a blue sage. If you want it to stand out, plant several plants to form an original ground cover at the base of grey-leaved plants such as artemisias and cineraria maritima.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Supertunia Pink Star petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (Supertunia petunias tolerate a slight late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. They will be more branched if you pinch the tips of the young shoots. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Don't water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They will need regular and frequent watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and prolong flowering.
