Description

The Petunia Supertunia 'Vista Silverberry' forms in one season impressive cascades of single flowers in funnel shape, with a finely veined silver-white colour, tinged with violet-pink in the throat, extremely bright. This vigorous and naturally ramified annual plant forms a very flowery dome from late spring to autumn. Its always perky appearance and its resistance to heat and bad weather allow for numerous uses, in the garden as well as in pots. This particularly generous plant requires full sun to flourish, and regular watering.

Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or frost-tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals, and all originate from the warm regions of South America. The Petunia Supertunia® is a sterile hybrid petunia dating back to 2006, with a trailing habit and not an upright one, which makes it a magnificent plant in hanging baskets. It also stands out for its beautiful and very long flowering period.

The Petunia Supertunia 'Vista Silverberry' forms a particularly vigorous and trailing clump of 40 cm (15.7 in) in height (sometimes 60 cm) that cascades up to 90 cm (35.4 in), or even 1.20 m (3.9 ft) at the end of the season. The plant is in bloom from June to October, or even until the first frost, as long as it is regularly provided with fertiliser and water during prolonged dry periods. Its single cup-shaped flowers are medium-sized, 5 cm wide, with a silver-white colour with violet veins plunging into a purple throat. They are tightly packed together on its long downy stems, hiding a dense foliage. The foliage, with an ovate shape and pointed tip, quite hairy, has entire edges and a greyish-green colour; it is vigorous and healthy. This variety tolerates bad weather and heat well, and its faded flowers fall off spontaneously, without the need for pruning.

No other flowering annual plant has been subject to such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive, as petunias compete with pelargoniums for the splendour and duration of their flowering, as demonstrated by this variety 'Supertunia Vista Silverberry'. Plant it in large pots, in containers or hanging baskets, alone or mixed with a blue or pink surfinia, a purple-leaved Ipomoea (I.Sweet Heart Purple) or a blue sage, as it will not smother these companion plants. If you want to stand out, plant several plants to form an original ground cover at the base of grey-leaved plants such as Nepeta faassenii or annual poppies in pastel colours.

Green plants from 4 to 8cm (3.1 in) in cases of 5 small plugs with a diameter of 2.8 cm (0.8 in) and a height of 4 cm (1.6 in) separately labelled. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Attention, our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (supertunia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Their habit will be more ramified if you pinch the tips of the young shoots during vegetative growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich but especially well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They will need regular and frequent watering during hot summer temperatures. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are also very hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid petunia fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and prolong flowering.
