Description

The Petunia 'Pure Raspberry' is a brand new hybrid variety that stands out for the exceptionally vibrant color of its flowers. This variety displays single funnel-shaped flowers in a bright pink-purple shade that can be noticed from afar. The plants form regular domes and bloom early in the season, continuing until October. This annual plant is easy to grow. Its fast growth and abundant flowering make it a great addition to a terrace or garden for almost 6 months, with minimal maintenance.

Hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. The Petunia 'Pure Raspberry' is a mutation of the variety 'Raspberry Star' that does not have the white star pattern on its flowers. It belongs to the Solanaceae family, closely related to ornamental tobacco, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. This variety quickly forms a round and dense clump measuring 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14in) in height and 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24in) in diameter, with a very solid appearance. The plant is in bloom from May to October, provided it is well-watered and regularly fertilized. Its cup-shaped flowers are medium-sized and crushed raspberry pink in color, densely packed together on dense foliage. The small center of the corolla is marked with black. The foliage, somewhat pubescent, has entire edges and a dark green color, and it is vigorous and healthy. This petunia is not easily affected by inclement weather!

No other flowering annual plant has been subjected to such intense selection by breeders for such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias rival pelargoniums in terms of splendor and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this wonderful variety 'Pure Raspberry'. Plant it in large pots or hanging baskets, creating a perfect contrast with dark blue Surfinia petunias. You can also plant it in flower beds, punctuating borders of gray-leaved plants such as ceraistes, sea cineraria, or artemisia. If you want to stand out, plant several plants to create an original ground cover at the base of plants like Faassen's catmints, Pennisetum setaceum Rubrum, or pastel-colored annual poppies.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frost has passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich soil, but above all well-draining. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer days. Very floriferous and with rapid growth, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertilizer for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
