Description

The Petunia Supertunia 'Vista Fuchsia' forms in one season impressive trailing clumps covered in single flowers displaying a solid fuchsia pink colour that is extremely vivid. This annual plant, particularly vigorous and naturally ramified, forms a highly flowered dome from late spring to autumn. Its always vibrant appearance, as well as its resistance to heat and bad weather, allow for numerous uses in the garden and in pots. This very generous plant thrives in full sun and requires regular watering.

The Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or tender perennial plants are mostly cultivated as annuals and all originate from the warm regions of South America. The Petunia Supertunia® is a sterile hybrid petunia dating back to 2006, with a trailing weeping habit, rather than an upright one, which makes it a magnificent plant in hanging baskets. It also stands out for its beautiful and very long flowering period.

The Petunia Supertunia 'Vista Fuchsia' easily reaches 40 cm (15.7 in) in height (sometimes 60 cm) and cascades up to 90 cm (35.4 in), or even 1.20 m (3.9 ft) by the end of the season. The plant is in bloom from June to October, and even until the first frosts, as long as it is regularly fertilized and watered during prolonged dry spells. Its single cup-shaped flowers are a medium-sized fuchsia pink, measuring 5-6 cm wide. They are closely packed together on its long downy stems, hiding a dense foliage. The fuzzy foliage, ovate with pointed tips, has entire edges and a greyish-green colour; it is vigorous and healthy. This variety withstands bad weather and heat well, and its faded flowers fall off spontaneously, without the need for pruning.

No other flowering annual plant has undergone such intense selection efforts by breeders over such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias rival geraniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this variety 'Supertunia Vista Fuchsia'. It fills large pots, as well as troughs or hanging baskets, on its own or mixed with a blue or white surfinia, a purple-leaved Ipomoea (I.Sweet Heart Purple) or a blue sage, as it does not smother these companion plants. If you want to stand out, plant several plants to create an original ground cover.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receiving them, transplant and store them in a sheltered area (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before installing them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Supertunia Vista Fuchsia petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (Supertunia petunias can tolerate a light late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to speed up their growth. Their habit will be more ramified if you pinch the tips of the young shoots during vegetative growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich but especially well-draining soil. Do not overwater them at the beginning of growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They will need regular and frequent watering during hot summer temperatures. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are also very hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid petunia fertilizer once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and prolong flowering.
