Primula vulgaris Belarina Pink Champagne - English Primrose

This Double Primrose Belarina Pink Champagne, a new pretty variety with double flowers, usually blooms from January to April. Its very romantic and slightly fragrant flowers mix two very soft tones - a tightly-packed cream-coloured heart surrounded by a bubbly, powdery pink. They are nestled in a tangle of wide, bright green, ruffled, evergreen leaves. Once stars of English cottage gardens, double primroses had almost disappeared. New varieties are bringing these adorable biennials back into the limelight, much to our delight! They are perfect in pots, planters, flower beds, borders, and even grow in shade in fertile and moist soil.

The Primula Belarina Pink Champagne is a perennial herbaceous plant from the primrose family, descended from our native and perennial Primula vulgaris. It is part of a series of recent creations that stand out for their radiant double flowers blooming from December-January to March-April. These plants flower abundantly among beautiful dense clumps of foliage, reaching a height of 15 to 20 cm (5.9 - 7.9 in) and a width of 25 to 30 cm (9.8 - 11.8 in) in just a few months. They develop evergreen rosettes of veined and ruffled leaves in a beautiful vibrant green. Belarina Pink Champagne produces 3 cm (1.2 in) diameter flowers that appear for 4 to 5 weeks. The double, rose-like flowers are soft-pink infused with a champagne centre slowly creeping across the petals. They are arranged in perfect clusters, borne on short, hairy stalks in amongst the lush foliage.

Belarina primroses are perennials often planted as biennials. They deserve a place in every garden and balcony. Their colourful, fragrant, abundance of flowers herald the return of spring. They are ideal companions for tulips, pansies, horned violets and forget-me-nots. Beneath deciduous trees, in rockeries and lawns, they are beautiful among snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be eaten raw or cooked.

Properties:

They are the same as those of the cowslip or oxlip: the flowers are soothing and calming and can be used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic and expectorant properties.
