Description

Viola wittrockiana Cts Red & Gold hybrid pansies are resplendent in red and gold. The flowers have a "face" adorned with large black veins, resembling long feline whiskers that enhance their unique personality. This variety is an improvement on traditional F1 hybrids, with relatively large flowers on small, vigorous plants that bloom early, starting from the end of winter. These hardy biennial plants are easy to grow in humus-bearing moist soil, in either full sun or partial shade.

Garden pansies, sometimes called Swiss giant pansies, are hybrids grouped under Viola x wittrockiana. They belong to the Violaceae family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically short-lived perennials. This variety produces bushy plants that quickly form compact, rounded clumps, reaching 15cm (6in) in all directions. Flowering occurs from late winter to late spring, or from late spring to late summer. Only high temperatures will slow down the abundant flowering, although the flowers continue to bloom if the plants are moved to light shade. Cats F1 Red & Gold bears fully open large flowers, measuring 6cm (2in) in diameter. They boast intense colours and a velvety texture. The flowers are bi-coloured, with the upper two petals ranging from brick red to crimson, while the lower two petals are golden yellow, broadly edged with the same red. Long black "whiskers" radiate from a tiny bright yellow and white heart. The medium green leaves are elliptical and widely crenate..

Pansies are wonderful in the garden, but they also work beautifully in a pot on a windowsill to be enjoyed up close. They look perfect alongside primroses, wallflowers, grape hyacinths, and daisies. They even work well with grasses like Japanese sedge for a contemporary style. Pair them with heucheras and tulips. The bluish-green colour of glaucous fescues also complements them well.

Pansy petals are edible, and their colours will add a unique touch to salads and pastries. For this use, consider growing them just like you would grow your vegetables, in the most natural way possible.

Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible in pots and containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Pansies thrive in humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist and fertile soil. A quality horticultural compost will be very suitable. They appreciate a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. They need to be fed with a liquid plant food for containers once or twice a week during the growth period. Water regularly but without excess. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
