Description

Erysimum 'Winter Passion' is a variety of perennial wallflower with exceptional ornamental qualities. It is our favourite for next spring! The long and fragrant flowering corresponds to large satin flowers of a powerful coppery red. Definitely a seductive perennial plant often used as a biennial in the composition of spring planters.

This new perennial shrub wallflower with an evocative name, and terribly appropriate blooms quite early in spring. From mid-March, its petals are revealed, first a bit wrinkled... then unfold to show the beautiful satin texture that perfectly suits their dark red colour, with rich coppery reflections, a bit provocative but not lacking in elegance. Very large in size, about 2cm (0.8in) in diameter each, and grouped in spikes, they will constantly renew themselves until the approach of the summer heat! A sweet and spicy fragrance emanates from them and spreads far and wide in calm and mild weather. Vigorous, the 'Winter Passion' perennial wallflower is a true "racehorse" for your seasonal flower arrangements in planters, containers, and pots in spring.

In the garden, it is a well-branched subshrub with a woody base, covered with narrow, abundant, evergreen, dark green foliage. This "false wallflower" (which nevertheless has almost everything of a true one!) will thrive in well-drained soil, even rocky, in full sun, where it will live for 3 to 5 years depending on the conditions. You will then need to renew it by summer cuttings. In compositions, it is a straight and structuring element, on which you can rely on lighter biennials such as pansies and forget-me-nots. It also works well in flower beds where you can accompany it with a wide choice of spring bulbs, crocuses, tulips, daffodils, fritillaries...

Note: Please note that our young plants in mini-pots are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in containers, planters or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

'Winter Light' Erysimum mini-plants can be planted in pots and planters or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible upon receipt, in September-October. If the intended location is not ready yet or if the conditions are not favorable for planting (heavy rains or too dry soil), you can let them grow in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. At planting or shortly after, you must pinch the tip of the plant between your thumb and index finger to remove the terminal bud and stimulate branching. You can repeat this operation until mid-October to obtain denser bushes.

In pots and planters, use a good, well-draining potting soil for flowering plants (for example, with a lot of bark or perlite) and enriched with slow-release fertilizer. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as mini-plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful of excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location from precipitation. Do not water during freezing periods.

Starting 3 weeks after planting and until after flowering, apply liquid fertilizer for flowering plants 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water, even in winter (as long as watering is necessary). The faded spikes can be cut with scissors to maintain a neat appearance of the plant, but it is not essential, as the flowering continues as long as the plant is not lacking water. Once the flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in full sun after being pruned by about 5cm (2in).
