Description

Colchicum macrophyllum is a very rare perennial. From September to November pretty flowers emerge before the leaves, in white veined with pink. They measure 5 to 10cm (2 to 4in) in diameter and are adorned with 6 stamens with white filaments and brown to yellow anthers.

Known as large leaved colchicum, it has basal leaves that are absent at flowering (it is thus said to be nudiflorous). They persist until July and measure up to 40cm (16in) long. It has beautiful shiny and decorative foliage. Colchicum macrophyllum has good hardiness.

This autumn crocus measures between 5 to 20cm (2 to 8in) in height at maturity. It is suitable for sunny flower beds as well as hedges, rocky areas or thickets.

Planting and care

Colchicum macrophyllum thrives in full sun in fertile, moist, well-drained soil but not too dry. Reserve a depth of 15cm (6in) when planting and space the young plants 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) apart. Plant colchicums in July-August so that they can flower in the first year of planting. After planting, leave them in place as they do not like to be disturbed. Water once a week during the growth period without wetting the leaves and flowers as this colchicum is prone to grey rot and slugs in humid weather. During summer dormancy, keep it dry. After flowering, they go dormant until spring and their leaves will bloom in May and completely disappear in July. The bulbs should not be consumed (they are toxic).
