Description

Clematis 'Jeanne's Pink' is a delicate and romantic variety known for its large flesh-toned flowers with rounded and beautifully crinkled petals, which give the illusion of double flowers. This climbing clematis flowers in May-June. It can bloom again in August-September. It bears salmon-pink flowers, which is quite rare for the species. They turn pure white at maturity. This perennial produces voluble stems with deciduous foliage that consists of bright green, ovate and pointed leaflets, forming a beautiful blanket that can cling to any support, be it a trellis or a bush. The medium growth of this variety makes it ideal for smaller spaces or in a pot against a patio wall. This hardy plant is easy to cultivate. Use this versatile plant to add a vertical flowering element to the garden. Plant it in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil that is ideally deep and rich.

The genus Clematis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. Clematis 'Jeanne's Pink' is an English variety obtained by E. Phillips. It is a result of cross-breeding with C. 'Miss Bateman'.

It is a woody, climbing perennial with short stems, reaching 2.5m (8ft) in height and spreading 1.5m (5ft). The deciduous leaves fall in winter. They are a vibrant green, composed of 3 ovate to lanceolate leaflets, measuring 3 to 7cm (1 to 3in) long and 1.5 to 5cm (1 to 2in) wide, with relatively prominent veins. The rounded, single flowers consist of 7 to 8 crinkled, oval, elliptical, overlapping and pointed tepals. They have a width of 12 to 14cm (5 to 6in) in diameter. The flowers open salmon-pink and turn pure white at maturity. They are sometimes double in spring. The stamens are white with cream-yellow anthers. The colour of the flowers tends to fade when fully open, especially when the plant is grown in very sunny conditions. This clematis clings to the support or host plant through voluble stems with petioles transformed into tendrils. The flowers are followed by decorative silvery-grey feathery fruits that last until winter.

Plant your clematis alongside climbing roses to extend the flowering period until the end of summer. It is a genus rich in diversity, with flowers of all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. To prevent heat stress and drying at the base, plant your clematis in the shade of a ground-cover perennial or a bush. Clematis 'Jeanne's Pink' is perfect in a small garden. It will thrive in a pot on a balcony or next to a doorway, embracing a small bamboo structure to welcome visitors with its magical colours. These light-coloured flowers will perfectly complement shrubs and perennials with dark foliage. Consider pairing it with the purple foliage of physocarpus, cotinus, heuchera, and Japanese maples. Alternatively, use it to brighten a dark wall or add colour to a dull evergreen hedge.

Planting and care

Choose a clear, sunny but non-scorching location. It can also grow in partial shade. In a sunny exposure, shade the base of the clematis with a ground cover plant or a perennial geranium. Clematis plants like to have cool roots. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), and lighten it with good compost and coarse sand. Position the plant and cover the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Water generously and regularly during the first few weeks. Do not let water stagnate as this can lead to the development of a fungus at the collar.

Clematis plants cling on their own thanks to their tendrils. To promote their growth, provide them with a trellis support or let them dress up the trunk of a tree by placing a wire mesh against the trunk for the clematis to climb on. Clematis plants also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.

In early spring, prune the previous year's stems to about 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) from the ground, above a pair of large buds.

It is easy to grow in a large pot, filled with good horticultural compost.
