A broken stem upon arrival but the plant has recovered well, with plenty of flowers. It will likely be even more beautiful next year.

Description

Clematis Proud Mary ('ZO18179') is a recent variety with remarkable flowers that bloom from top to bottom between late spring and the end of summer. Its beautiful flowers are composed of four petals painted lilac with purple at the base around a bouquet of red stamens. Its compact size is perfect for small gardens and patios.

The genus Clematis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. Proud Mary is a Dutch hybrid horticultural variety that was awarded at the Plantarium in Boskoop in 2022. It belongs to the group of clematis that flower in late spring on the previous year's shoots, and then later on the current year's shoots. It is a climbing perennial plant, semi-woody, with short stems, which will reach a height of 1.5m (5ft), with a spread of 1m² (3ft²). Proud Mary bears patens-type flowers, 10cm (4in) in diameter. The bisexual flowers are either solitary or grouped in cymes. They have 4 mauve-lilac petals with dark pinkish-purple spots at the base and centre. They open in a star shape with red stamens at the centre. The leaves are light green and quite thin. This clematis clings to support or host plants through petioles transformed into tendrils. Its deciduous leaves are absent in winter.

Plant your clematis alongside roses to extend the flowering period of walls and pergolas until the end of summer. It is a diverse genus, with varieties in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. Proud Mary will also thrive in a pot on a patio or next to a doorway. Also consider scented sweet peas to accompany small clematis.

Planting and care

Ideally, plant it in the sun, in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil, shading the roots and base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Herbaceous species prefer full sun and wilt in overly wet soil. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), lightened with good quality compost. Plant it by covering the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Water regularly and generously during the first few weeks. Do not overwater, as stagnant water can lead to the development of fungus at the base of the plant. Cover the base of climbing clematis with a small mound of soil, to reduce the risk of wilting, while promoting the growth of vigorous shoots from the stump. After planting, prune the stems of deciduous climbing clematis to about 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds.

Mulch in February with garden compost or well-decomposed manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems.

Train the stems, without tightening them, until the plant grips itself. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.

This variety flowers on the previous year's shoots, so lightly prune in March (a simple cleaning is sufficient). After the spring flowering, optionally shorten the branches so that the clematis branches strongly and forms new shoots that produce a second flowering during the summer season. Only prune severely to rejuvenate your clematis every 4 or 5 years.

Voles and grey worms can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential pests. Gastropods attack young spring shoots.
