To be completely honest, I doubted its recovery: it looked rather sad despite having a beautiful root system upon arrival. Well, I was wrong. It's beautiful, very floriferous. It's truly a lovely surprise.

Description

Clematis Saphyra Nancy ('Cleminov15') adds a gorgeous fuchsia-pink colour with shiny reflections to the Saphyra series of clematis. These plants are very compact, perfectly hardy, disease-resistant, and highly floriferous. With its small growth, it can be used as a climbing plant or ground cover. It is suitable for small urban gardens, balconies, and patios. It blooms profusely in summer, producing flowers that resemble large stars. It is an easy-to-grow variety that requires very little maintenance. Ideal for beginner gardeners!

The genus Clematis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. Saphyra Nancy is a horticultural variety derived from Clematis integrifolia, an herbaceous clematis native to southern Europe. It is a group 3 clematis that blooms throughout summer on new growth. It is a slightly climbing semi-woody plant with short stems, reaching an average height of 1.75m (6ft) (or spread, if allowed to run on the ground). Every spring, numerous stems emerge from its base. From June to September, it bears flowers approximately 10cm (4in) in diameter. Each flower has 5 or 6 pointed petals. The star-shaped pink flowers are solitary or grouped in clusters. They have relatively thick petals that are slightly glossy. The yellow stamen centre turns white. The dark green leaves are simple and palmate with irregularly serrated edges. The above-ground foliage is deciduous and dries up in autumn.

Plant your Saphyra Clematis alongside roses to extend the flowering period of walls and trellises until the end of summer. Take advantage of its easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. Saphyra Nancy will also thrive in a pot on a balcony or next to a doorway. It will also look beautiful placed above a low wall, where it will bloom throughout summer. Alternatively, it can be allowed to run freely as a ground cover in a shrub bed composed of landscape or ground cover roses, escallonias, deutzias, or spireas.

Planting and care

Ideally, plant it in the sun. It prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Shade the roots and base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Herbaceous species prefer full sun and wilt in excessively moist soil. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), lightened with good quality compost. Plant it by covering the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. After planting, prune the stems to about 30 cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Water regularly and generously during the first few weeks. Do not overwater, as stagnant water can lead to the development of fungus at the base of the plant. Cover the base of your climbing clematis with a small mound of soil to reduce the risk of wilting and encourage vigorous shoots from the stump.

Mulch in February with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems.

Train the stems, without squeezing them, until the plant grips by itself. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.

This variety flowers on new growth, so prune it quite severely in late winter. Young shoots attract the attention of slugs.

Voles and grey worms can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential parasites.
