Description

Clematis cirrhosa Jingle Bells has the unique characteristic of flowering throughout winter. This climbing perennial bears an abundance of bell-shaped flowers from December to March, with a creamy-white colour and long yellowish-green anthers. The flowers are single and trailing, measuring 6 to 10cm (2 to 4in) long. They have a lemon scent.

Place it near a pathway or doorway to enjoy its pleasant fragrance. Its evergreen foliage is dark green and glossy, turning bronze in winter. At maturity, it can reach a height of 2 to 3m (7 to 10ft). It is typically a very hardy plant.

This climbing plant can be used on an old wall, trellis, arbour, pergola, fence, or even on a tree. It can climb anywhere with the help of its tendrils. You can also grow it in containers on patios and balconies.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Jingle Bells' requires a position in full sun, sheltered from strong winds. It can also be placed in a partially sunny location. Keep the base in shade and the head in the sun. You can shade the base of your plant with a ground cover plant or a perennial geranium. A bark mulch helps maintain soil moisture. It prefers light, fertile soil that is moist but well-drained. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), and lighten it with good compost. Position the plant and cover the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Adding fertiliser in summer is recommended. Clematis is sensitive to excess moisture. However, water it well during the growing season, but not directly on the base. Stagnant water can cause fungus at the base of clematis plants.

It does not require any specific pruning. However, you can prune it to 40cm (16in) from the ground in early spring to increase its density and flowering.

Clematis attach themselves using their tendrils. To help them grow, provide them with a trellis or let them dress the trunk of a tree by placing a wire mesh against the trunk to support the clematis. Clematis also enjoy growing freely on neighbouring plants.

They can be susceptible to fungal diseases (such as leaf spots), especially in winter.
