Description

Clematis Multi Pink, recently obtained in the Netherlands, has a unique combination of large, double, and ruffled flowers shaped like cactus dahlias, and a two-tone pink colour. Despite its moderate growth, this variety is a vigorous plant, with rapid growth, easy to grow, and floriferous throughout summer. Plant this little exotic marvel in your garden, so you can admire it as often as possible, or in a large pot to decorate the terrace or balcony.

The Clematis genus belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. 'Multi Pink' is a very recent cultivar, awarded as the best novelty by the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society in the Netherlands, and presented at the Plantarium in Boskoop (Netherlands) in 2020. It is a double-flowered mutation of the tender pink large-flowered variety 'Hagley Hybrid' (also known as Pink Chiffon), the hardiest of the pink-flowered clematis.

It is a woody, climbing perennial plant with short stems, which will not exceed m high, with a spread of 1m². The deciduous, bright green leaves are composed of 3 ovate to lanceolate leaflets, 3 to 7 cm (1 to 3in) long and 1.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) wide, with relatively prominent veins. The very double flowers are composed of countless elliptical and very tapered tepals (indistinguishable petals), 10 cm (4in) wide. The centre of the flower is violet pink, enhancing the pastel pink of the rest of the flower. The colour of the flowers tends to fade at full bloom, especially when the plant is grown in a very sunny location. This clematis clings to its support or host plant through twining stems with petioles transformed into tendrils. This variety is healthy and hardy.

Plant clematis alongside your climbing roses or vines to extend the flowering of your walls and pergolas until the end of summer. It is a diverse genus, available in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. The surprising 'Multi Pink' variety, with its exotic-looking flowers, will be perfect trained against a wall. Thanks to its rather modest size, it will easily fit in a small garden and will thrive in a pot on a balcony or next to an entrance door, twining around a small structure to welcome visitors with its magically coloured flowers.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny but not scorching exposure, or partial shade. In sunny exposure, shade the base of your plant with a ground cover or a perennial geranium. Clematis like to have their feet in the shade. Plant your clematis by covering the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, in soil worked to a depth of 20 cm (8in), lightened with good compost. Water abundantly and regularly during the first few weeks. Clematis cling on their own thanks to their tendrils. To promote their growth, provide them with trellis support or help them dress the trunk of a tree by placing a wire mesh. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants. In early spring, prune the previous year's stems to about 15-20 cm (6-8in) above the ground, above a pair of healthy buds. Do not over-water, as stagnant water can cause the development of a deadly fungus at the base.

Easy to grow in a large pot, filled with good horticultural compost.
