More information

A miniature herbaceous clematis which forms a leafy tuft of 50 cm (20in) on which white flowers bloom in the shape of small trailing bells, delicately scented and as delicate as porcelain. The vegetation of this Baby White clematis completely disappears in winter. Its very modest size and long flowering make it an ideal variety for pot cultivation, but also an excellent perennial for small spaces.

Description

Clematis Baby White is a lovely miniature form of Clematis integrifolia with white flowers, a herbaceous clematis that is more like a perennial than a climber. Its long-lasting summer flowering takes the form of small, bell-shaped, white, delicately scented flowers, like porcelain. After the flowers, silky and silvery seeds remain decorative for a long time. Compact, floriferous, and graceful, this cheeky little clematis is ideal for flower pots. It is also an excellent perennial for borders and its flowers are very pretty in bouquets.

Clematis belong to the Ranunculaceae family. 'Baby White' Clematis is a horticultural variety derived from Clematis integrifolia, a hardy, non-woody clematis native to southern Europe. It is a herbaceous, minimally climbing perennial with long leafy stems, forming a bushy clump that does not exceed 50 cm (20in) high, with a roughly equivalent spread. The plant is slow to establish and deeply roots itself in the soil before showing exponential growth in subsequent years. Each spring, numerous stems emerge directly from its base bearing small, entire, ovate to elliptical, deep, shiny green leaves. The bell-shaped flowers bloom from June to September among the foliage, composed of 4 petals fused at the base, slightly twisted, and turned back at their tips. They are 3-4 cm (1-2in) wide and hide yellow anther stamens in their bluish throats. Like its parent, this variety tolerates drought once established and prefers sunny but not scorching situations.

Plant 'Baby White' clematis in a pot or in the ground. To accompany it, consider nepetas and perennial geraniums not far from your roses to accompany their flowering and fill in their sometimes bare feet. Clematis represents a diverse genus, with varieties available in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. Thanks to its herbaceous growth habit and small size, exquisite 'Baby White', will thrive in a pot on a balcony or on a slope filled with perennial sweet-peas, variegated ivy, small-flowered periwinkles, coreopsis, and euphorbias.

Planting and care

'Baby White' clematis thrives in rich, humus-rich, well-drained soils. This variety tolerates periods of moderate drought well. It prefers partial shade and requires plenty of light to flower properly. However, it dislikes direct, scorching sunlight. Sometimes slow to establish, it roots deeply before taking off and can eventually become a bit suckering. It is a long-lasting perennial without any issues.
