The clematis disappeared during the summer after planting, despite being mulched with straw and watered. I am disappointed.

Description

The Clematis montana 'Freda' or Mountain Clematis is a beautiful climbing perennial, very vigorous, with small pink flowers widely maculated with white.

From June to July, this robust plant, reaching a height of 7m (23ft), covers a large area with single flowers with 4 petals, bright pink maculated with white and yellow anthers, 6cm (2in) in diameter on the previous year's shoots. Its deciduous oval, dentate bronze green to medium green leaves, 8cm (3in) long, are carried by voluble stems that twine around their support with tendrils. At the end of flowering, fruits appear, topped with a silvery grey feathery style, very decorative.

Native to the northern hemisphere, Clematis montana 'Freda' likes clay-siliceous, well-worked, deep, moist and fertile soil, in a sunny position with the base in shade. To achieve this, plant ground cover plants. The east is suitable.

Clematis montana 'Freda' climbs trellises, fences, pylons, arches, as well as trees and shrubs. In a container on a terrace, it will work wonders! Combine several species of clematis or marry it with a climbing rose!

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilisers that stimulate foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to avoid excessive moisture that promotes wilting disease.

Planting and care

The Clematis montana 'Freda' is planted in spring or autumn at a depth of 8 cm (3in), with the root ball laid flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head in the sun and the foot in the shade. Cover the foot with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, cut back the stems to 30 cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Tie them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. The pruning afterwards will involve removing dead or damaged stems after flowering.
