Description

A remarkable Japanese Clematis, with its large double violet-purple flowers and fluffy white undersides.

Like most Clematis in the Patens group, it primarily blooms in late Spring, then has a second flowering in late July/early August. The flowers of the second bloom are less doubled in form.

Very tolerant, this Clematis can be grown in a pot and can withstand all exposures from partial shade to full sun.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny or semi-shady exposure. In sunny exposure, shade the base of your plant with a ground cover or a perennial geranium. Clematis like to have their feet cool. Plant your young plant by covering the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, in soil worked to a depth of 20 cm (8in), lightened with good compost. During the first few weeks, water abundantly and regularly. Clematis attach themselves easily with their tendrils. To promote their growth, provide them with a trellis or let them dress the trunk of a tree by placing a wire mesh around it. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants. You can prune it in March to a height of up to 25 cm (10in). We advise you not to overwater, as stagnant water can cause fungus at the base of the clematis.
