Description

The Common Ivy 'Harlequin' (Hedera helix 'Harlequin') is a climbing or creeping plant that stands out for its variegated leaves in vibrant colours. This variety of ivy produces lobed leaves in shades of green, marked with yellow to cream white, which change colour over the weeks. It can be used to adorn walls, in pots or in hanging displays in the garden, or as an indoor plant.

Ivy belongs to the Araliaceae family. The Hedera genus comprises about a dozen species, the most common in our latitudes being the Common Ivy, in Latin Hedera helix. This giant of our forests can reach lengths of several metres and climb to the tops of trees.

Hedera helix 'Harlekijn', with more moderate growth, is characterised by its variegated leaves, changing from light green marked with yellow to dark green with white. The leaves are broad, with several lobes, glossy, with wavy edges. This plant exhibits rapid growth, especially in spring and summer, and it can reach 3 m in height if trained. Its stems cling to supports by powerful climbing roots. Common Ivy 'Harlequin' rarely flowers indoors, but when grown outdoors, it can produce flowers in September-October, followed by black berries. Its greenish, round inflorescences are an excellent nectar source for bees. Its black berries, toxic to humans, represent an excellent source of winter food for birds.
The very hardy 'Harlequin' ivy can withstand temperatures down to about -18 °C, and it can be grown practically anywhere, requiring no special maintenance.

Hedera helix 'Harlekijn' will fit perfectly into a contemporary garden, a lush conservatory, or a bright room that is not overly heated. It is among the plants known for their air-purifying qualities. Plant it at the base of a wall. It will be valuable for dressing a vertical surface or enhancing the decor of a terrace. This plant will cascade in variegated drapes along large containers or hanging pots. In the garden, it forms an elegant ground cover. Pair it with easy-going woodland perennials such as Epimedium, Pulmonarias, or Hellebores.

Planting and care

Hedera helix 'Harlequin', which is easy to cultivate in any ordinary soil, can be planted all year round. It prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil but is very accommodating (regarding the presence of lime or clay if the soil is well worked) and quite drought-resistant once established. Ideally, position it against a wall in a semi-shaded location sheltered from cold winds to help it settle in, and water during the first two years following planting, especially in the event of a dry summer. To encourage young shoots more quickly, secure the first ones to the soil (layering). You can rejuvenate the base by removing old branches. Prune regularly to shape it. Remove any branches that bear non-variegated leaves or those that take on an upright, bushy form.

For container cultivation, mix 7 parts ordinary soil, 3 parts organic matter, and 2 parts sand. Water regularly and provide fertiliser every month during the growing season. Keep the substrate moist during winter.
