Description

Jasminum polyanthum is a climbing plant with fast growth that seduces with its abundant, highly scented, small porcelain pink flowers from the end of winter.

Originally from China, this delicate Jasmine is preferably grown in a pot except in mild climates. The foliage, with 7 dark green, evergreen, pinnate leaflets, is covered with numerous small bouquets of star-shaped flowers, 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, pure white and highly scented. These flowers are pink in bud and whiten as they bloom.

Jasminum polyanthum thrives in a moist, fertile, and well-drained soil in full sunlight and sheltered from cold winds. Water generously once the flowers appear. Pruning to maintain balance is sufficient.

Jasminum polyanthum climbs trellises, arches, pergolas, stair railings, or balconies. It can also be grown in a container on a terrace to fully enjoy its intense fragrance.

Tips: If you bring it indoors, make sure to provide high humidity as the foliage and flowers quickly wilt in dry atmospheres. Regularly spray with non-alkaline water.

Planting and care

Jasminum polyanthum is planted in spring in moist, fertile and well-drained soil in full sun and sheltered from cold winds. Mulch the base and water generously as soon as the flowers appear. A regular pruning is sufficient. Beware of aphids! In a 50cm (20in) pot, use good, rich, moist and light soil, specifically for Mediterranean plants. From early spring to mid-September, fertilise every 15 days with liquid fertiliser, always on moist soil. In summer, it requires abundant watering, but in winter, let the soil dry well between watering. The jasmine is very vigorous even in a pot and can become bare at the base. In this case, prune the old branches and leave only 3 young shoots. In winter, place it in a conservatory or a temperate greenhouse, around 16°C (60.8°F), with plenty of light. Regularly spray the leaves with lime-free water, this will prevent attacks from red spider mites.
