Description

Jasminum x stephanense Starry Starry Summer Scent, also known by its varietal name 'Ganmin 1701' is a hybrid jasmine variety resulting from a series that crosses the divine flowering of Jasminum polyanthum and the legendary robustness of Jasminum officinale. It is quite hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -12 to -15°C. This selection has large, deep pink flowers, edged with white. They are highly fragrant and exude the scent of fresh jasmine. Flowering takes place between spring and summer, depending on the climate. It is a climbing shrub with twining stems and foliage that is more or less evergreen in winter. Plant in full sun, in a sheltered position.

Jasmine Starry Starry Summer Scent belongs to the Oleaceae family and is a horticultural creation by Branded Garden Products Ltd. (United Kingdom). This quite hardy jasmine is easily grown in the ground, except in the coldest areas, where it is possible to grow it in a large container to overwinter it like a citrus plant. This climber will reach between 3 and 4 m high, rapidly spreading over 2 m to 2.50 m. The flowering is remarkably abundant and fragrant, lasting from one to three months, usually in spring (between May and June), but it can be later in cooler regions (July-August). The plant is covered with large inflorescences composed of numerous dark pink flower buds that open into star-shaped, 5 cm diameter, deep pink flowers with white edges, and an intoxicating fragrance. The foliage consists of pinnate leaves with 5 to 7 elongated and pointed, vibrant green leaflets. They are deciduous below -5°C or evergreen if the temperature is milder. The stems become woody and light brown with age. When young and green, they twine around any support, branches, wire mesh, or trellis. The young branches, which bear the foliage, are flexible, green, smooth (or mildly hairy), angular or ridged.

Jasmine Starry Starry Summer Scent appreciates a warm and sheltered position away from winds. Plant it so that it climbs on bushes, trellises, arches, pergolas, stair railings, or balconies. You van also plant it in a container on a terrace, to fully enjoy its intense fragrance. It can be combined with other climbing plants with staggered or simultaneous flowering: Alpine Clematis 'Ocean Pearl' with double flowers in April-May, the small Wisteria 'Cecilia', climbing rose 'James Galway' and many others.

Planting and care

Jasminum 'Starry Starry Summer Scent' should be planted in spring, in moist, fertile and well-drained soil, in full sun and sheltered from cold winds. The presence of limestone in the soil is tolerated well. Mulch the base and water generously as soon as the flowers appear. If the crown is well established, it will withstand short frosts between -12 and -15°C and new shoots will emerge in spring. Pruning is necessary at the end of winter, when vegetation starts. This plant tolerates drought quite well once it is well rooted. It can tolerate partial shade, but flowering is more abundant in the sun. Avoid exposing it to cold drafts to preserve its flowers. In cold regions, place the jasmine against a south-facing wall that will give it some warmth.

For container cultivation: choose a container of 50 cm, with good, rich, moist and light soil, specifically for Mediterranean plants. From early spring until mid-September, enrich with liquid fertiliser every 15 days, always on moist soil. In spring and summer, it needs abundant watering, but in winter let the soil dry out a little between two waterings. Jasmine is very vigorous even in a pot and can become bare at the base. In this case, old branches should be pruned to leave only 3 young shoots. In winter, place it in a veranda or a temperate greenhouse, around 15°C and with plenty of light. Regularly spray the foliage with non-limestone water, this will prevent attacks from red spider mites.
