One star less, just because the plant is a bit tired, a shame because my second purchase is perfect. Four stars because the plant is still green, it just got a bit too hot. Thank you for the quick delivery.

Description

The Passiflora 'Anastasia' is a hybrid variety resulting from the cross-breeding of P. gritensis and P. caerulea 'Constance Elliott'. The result is stunning! This beautiful climber offers from spring to autumn a constellation of large flowers in a deep and radiant pink, nicely contrasted with a reddish crown and white filaments. It will thrive better in gardens with a mild climate as it is very sensitive to cold and should preferably be planted in partial shade. This lovely rambler remains relatively compact with its 2 to 3 metres (7 to 10 feet) in height. It will, therefore, be perfectly comfortable in a terrace pot or a conservatory and brought indoors when temperatures drop below 5 °C (41°F).

Mainly from tropical areas of South America, passionflowers belong to the large family of Passifloraceae, which includes 400 species and numerous spontaneous or horticultural hybrids.

'Anastasia' is a rambling plant with evergreen stems that clings to its support using tendrils, reaching an average height of 2.50 metres (8 feet). Its long stems are adorned with leaves divided into 3 to 5 thick oval lobes of a shiny dark green colour, more or less evergreen. Its flowering extends from late spring to early autumn in the form of flowers 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) in diameter that constantly repeat on the plant. Its lightly scented flowers are formed by petals in a deep and vibrant pink, contrasting beautifully with the crown of filaments in a bright white, becoming raspberry red towards the centre. They are highly appreciated by pollinating insects.

This Passion Flower is not a capricious and difficult plant to cultivate like some orchids. It grows quickly in any well-drained, light, relatively deep and not-too-dry soil in summer and blooms generously in partial shade in a sheltered location. It is best to avoid planting it in full sun in regions with hot summers. At the end of flowering, pruning consists of reducing the branches to maintain a beautiful habit. It thrives in all southern and Atlantic regions. With its compact habit, 'Anastasia' will also be highly appreciated in conservatories, where it will withstand cold winters without damage.

Planting and care

The 'Anastasia' passionflower is a plant that doesn't like scorching sun and should be planted in a sheltered spot away from cold and drying winds. Plant it preferably in partial shade in a regular, deep, well-worked, well-amended, and well-drained soil. Under these conditions, it grows easily without any particular requirements for the soil as long as it is balanced and healthy. Place it on a support to support the weight of vegetation. Guide its branches well onto the support as the growth is exuberant. Pruning before winter is recommended to maintain a reasonable size. Don't hesitate to cut back the main branches to facilitate growth. Remove dead or misplaced branches and prune excess branches to provide air circulation. Watch out for scale insects, whiteflies, and the cucumber mosaic virus. Treat preventively.
