Description

The 'Constance Elliott' passionflower is a white variety of passion flower. It is slightly more resilient (up to -7°C (19.4°F)) than the common P. caerulea species and can remain in the ground during winter if exposed to the south or west and mulched in winter. It blooms continuously from June until the first frost and has lightly scented 7 cm (3in) ivory-white flowers. The passionflower is originally from South America and was named by the conquistadors for its magnificent flowers. It was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century and is a fast-growing plant that will add a touch of enchantment to your terrace during summer.

Planting and care

Passifloras are quite delicate to grow as they are susceptible to frost. The caerulea 'Constance Elliot', undoubtedly the most resistant variety, can withstand frost up to around -5 °C (23°F). It can therefore remain in the ground, in a sheltered position, along a south-facing wall. Take care to mulch it well before the first frosts. Cut it back to the ground in severe frost at the beginning of spring. Otherwise, prune it severely as the flowers appear on the new shoots. It won't hold it against you: it grows quickly and can grow up to 4m (13ft) per year. Apart from its fear of extreme cold, it is hardy and easily adapts to sunny positions. It prefers a relatively poor, well-drained soil.
