Schizophragma corylifolium

Schizophragma corylifolium, native to China, is a superb suckering bush, related to Hydrangeas, whose adventitious roots allow it to cling to many supports. Standing at a height of 4 m, it has dense and beautiful, intense green foliage and clusters of sterile flowers with fine cream bracts in summer contrasting beautifully with the green foliage!

Schizophragma corylifolium is a suckering bush native to China, belonging to the Hydrangea family. It forms a woody climber equipped with adventitious roots, reaching a height of 3 or 4 m (10 or 13ft). Its dense and bushy, grey-brown branches are striped in the lengthwise direction and slightly hairy when young. It has deciduous foliage, composed of intense green, heart-shaped leaves, slightly toothed, with a long petiole of 2 to 10 cm (1 to 4in). From May to July, it displays graceful flowering in the form of flat corymbs measuring 8 to 17 cm (3 to 7in) in diameter, composed of small white sterile flowers adorned with fine, pointed cream bracts.

This Schizophragma is a robust and hardy climbing plant, easy to grow, capable of climbing and conquering many supports, thanks to its adventitious roots. Highly decorative with its beautiful intense green foliage superbly contrasting with its cream inflorescences, it is an essential climbing plant for a natural garden, a garden in green and white tones, or a romantic or wild garden. Appreciating semi-shaded positions, it will be ideal for embellishing and concealing a wall, but it can also climb into a tree. Not invasive at all, it will adapt its growth to the size of the support. It can be associated with climbing Roses, Clematis, other climbing Hydrangeas, as well as Hops or a climbing Fuchsia.
