Description

The Thunbergia alata, or more poetically Black-eyed Susan, is an annual climbing plant with charming orange flowers with a black heart.

With rapid growth, your young green plant will reach 2m in just one summer and will continuously flower until September.

It is suitable for pot cultivation as well as in open ground, in sunny locations. A voluble climbing plant but light, it pairs well with a perennial climber and can also be used as ground cover.

We often combine it with summer flowering bulbs, such as gladioli: it twines around the leaves and flowers in the most unexpected places, adding a touch of whimsy to somewhat rigid borders.

Young plants of 4 to 8cm in plug plants of 5 small plugs of 3.6 cm in diameter and 4 cm high. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in open ground.

Note: Please note, our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Thunbergia Alata in the ground or in a pot. If you plant them in the ground, wait until the last frosts have passed (the Black-eyed Susans do not tolerate frost and do not cope well with temperatures below 8°). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place in a pot to accelerate their growth. Plant your Black-eyed Susans in a sunny or semi-shaded location. They need a light and humus-bearing soil. They tolerate short drought periods quite well, but will need regular watering during hot summer temperatures to flower well. In pots, they need to be watered very regularly. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they reach 2m in a single summer. Remember to provide support if you use them as climbers. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually very fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors in September, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter.
