Received in 2019, I reported by email in October 2021 (email that went unanswered) a wrong variety of product (definitely wisteria) which was confirmed by the blooming this spring 2023. This time I received a credit note (which is not a replacement as I had to pay extra out of my pocket!). I'm keeping my fingers crossed: I hope to receive the correct product this time and not have to wait 7 years to enjoy the blooming!

Description

Millettia japonica 'Satsuma' is a little-known climbing plant that produces lovely clusters of crimson-purple flowers in summer. The blooms are similar in appearance to wisteria flowers.

Originating from Asia (China and Japan), this vigorous climber can reach heights of 5 to 6m (16 to 20ft). It bears beautiful clusters of delicately fragrant flowers in summer. The upright blooms measure 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in) in length. The boast a lovely crimson-purple shade, and last until autumn.

Its shiny green foliage is composed of 7 to 9 lanceolate odd-pinnate leaflets. It is semi-evergreen in mild oceanic climates, but may become deciduous in more severe climates.

With low hardiness, it is best suited to coastal and mild regions. It can withstand temperatures down to around -8°C (17.6°F), beyond which it should be grown in a pot and protected indoors from frost.

Plant it in a sunny spot in rich, moist, and well-drained soil. Let it climb on a pergola, arbour, or small bush. In colder regions, outdoor cultivation may be unpredictable but not impossible, provided it is grown against a south-facing wall and given winter protection.
