One of the lilies has grown very well and has bloomed wonderfully. Unfortunately, only one out of the 3 did. However, I still have hope to see them grow and bloom next season.

Description

Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana', or glory lily, is a rare climbing bulbous plant with undulating red flowers with a yellow heart.

Also known as the Malabar lily, this tender plant develops a small voluble liana about 2m (7ft) tall with dark green, lance-shaped, glossy foliage. From June to August, the large 10cm (4in) long flowers, whose colour changes from green to yellow and red, appear with a unique shape reminiscent of that of a lily. The narrow and undulating petals curl backward. The long yellow filaments and prominent pistil emerge from the centre of the flowers. The flowering will be more abundant if you bend the liana by winding it around its support.

Gloriosa 'Rothschildiana' is sensitive to frost and therefore is cultivated in a well-drained pot, in good soil. Being a tropical plant, it requires a lot of heat and good humidity.

Be careful! It is toxic if ingested!

For an exotic effect, plant it in a terracotta pot or place your pot in a rattan or bamboo cachepot.

Planting and care

Plant from March to May, with the bulb flat in a 20cm (8in) pot, covered with 5cm (2in) of soil, alone or preferably in pairs, head to toe. Water regularly and keep at a temperature above 12° (53.6°F). Apply fertiliser once a week, as gloriosa is a hungry plant. You can take the pot outdoors from June onwards. Curl the liana by winding it around its support, as this will stimulate flowering. At the end of the flowering period, stop watering and store until the following spring. You can also plant it directly in the ground, but only after the last frost, in a sheltered and sunny location with moist soil. Don't forget to dig up and store the bulbs in early autumn, placing them in a crate covered with turf.
