The spade is the first tool every gardener should have! It is mainly used for manually loosening the soil at depth on small areas of loose and light soil. The spade should be driven into the ground, using the users weight to press against the footrests and the handle. Then, the handle should be tilted backwards to lift and turn the clod. If the soil is too compact, the sharp edge of the blade and the "T" handle of this garden spade allow for precise and rapid crumbling of the clod. The spade is versatile and can also be used for planting and incorporating fertilisers into the soil. It makes it easy to uproot perennial plants and divide them into clumps that can be replanted elsewhere in the garden. It can also be used for light earthworks. For rocky soils, use forks or a shovel for heavy soils. To aerate the surface of the soil without disturbing the microfauna, opt for claw tools or grelinettes.
