Received my pair of blue and pink blueberry young plants in good condition despite the good protections. I don't know if it's because the order has to cross the border and therefore there is a loss of time and chaotic transport. Both shoots have struggled to restart but after a year, they are starting to grow properly. I recommend them.

Planting and care

The planting of the Blueberry bush is ideally done in autumn or throughout the year, as long as there is no frost. This bush should be planted in the sun in the North and preferably in partial shade in the South, choose a sheltered spot. If you plant multiple plants, space them 1.20m (4ft) apart in all directions. The Blueberry bush is generally hardy, but some varieties need cold weather, while others need more heat. 'Powder Blue', like other Vaccinum ashei varieties, is perfectly hardy (-18°C (1°F)) and will bear fruit even in temperate regions where winters are not very long.

Plant it in acidic soil by incorporating pure heather soil or a mixture of ordinary soil and peat, well-decomposed bark compost. The collar should be level with the ground. Firmly pack the soil and water generously. In slightly limestone soil, dig a hole 50 to 60cm (20 to 24in) deep, line the edges with a garden felt, place a non-limestone gravel bed 10cm (4in) thick at the bottom, then fill with a mixture of heather soil.

The soil should remain moist but not waterlogged; the plant can tolerate moderate drought and dislikes stagnant moisture. If watering is necessary, use non-limestone and non-chlorinated water (such as rainwater collected, for example). Mulch the base with crushed bark, straw, or fern leaves. It is sometimes useful to put up a protective net if birds become too greedy during harvest time. In spring, annually apply a little well-rotted compost on the surface. The Blueberry bush is not very susceptible to diseases and pests.

Care

Pruning instructions During the first three years, let the bush grow naturally. Remove the old wood (the branches that have fruited for 3 or 4 years) every year at the end of winter, and if pruning is needed for shaping, it is best done in summer, just after the fruit harvest. The fruits appear on 2-year-old branches and become scarce on branches that are 4 years and older.
