Description

The 'Francese Bianca' vine, also known as 'Blanche de France', is a French hybrid whose precise identification and origin remain uncertain. In certain regions of Italy, this variety is commonly called "Blanc Écologique" due to its remarkable disease resistance, a characteristic that allows it to be cultivated without the use of pesticides. Grafting this variety is also optional, as its root system is naturally resistant to phylloxera. It produces generous clusters and large, elongated golden yellow grapes. It is a table variety appreciated for its crunchy, aromatic, and very sweet berries. This vine prefers fertile soils and ripens around mid-September.

The 'Blanche de France' vine is a deciduous climbing fruit plant that belongs to the Vitaceae family, like all vines. It has an irregular habit with sparse but very long branches. Its palmate, lobed leaves are a characteristic light green. The flower, which forms in May in a panicle, has a yellowish-green hue. Initially erect, it becomes pendulous when it transforms into a cluster. Its grapes are large, elongated, and golden yellow, with a very sweet pulp.

The 'Francese Bianca' vine is particularly suitable for planting near houses for the greening of pergolas, as it generally requires no treatment. However, its moderately late ripening and high productivity require special attention.

The grapes can be consumed as table fruit, fresh, but also in jams, jellies, fruit juice, and pastries. Consider extending the harvest period by planting several varieties of vines.

The vinification of the 'Francese Bianca' vine is prohibited under laws that stipulate that only grapes from Vitis vinifera can be used for wine production.

Planting and care

Since the ravages of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, vines are now grafted onto different rootstocks resistant to this disease and adapted to different types of soil. These rootstocks come from American varieties. Plant the French White vine in autumn, in deep, well-drained, rich soil, even stony and limestone, in a sunny exposure, sheltered from strong winds. Incorporate 3 or 4 handfuls of fertiliser for fruit trees and 2 kg of composted manure into the planting soil for each vine. The roots must not be in contact with the manure. After planting, prune above 2 large buds (buds) to obtain the growth of two branches. Keep the most vigorous one, and tie it to a stake. The pruning will follow.

The vine does not require regular fertiliser application, for good yield, on the contrary. Enrich the soil with potash, crushed horn or iron chelate, only every 2-3 years.

Care

Pruning instructions Training pruning: the vertical cord is the simplest, to cover a building or a high wall. Keep a vertical main stem on which spaced secondary branches will be grown every 20 cm. Extend the cord by a height of 50 to 60 cm each year. To obtain a bilateral cord (with two arms), select two opposite buds that will be individually trained into a cord. Fruiting size: the vine flowers on the shoots of the year, carried by the branches of the previous year. For abundant fruiting, it is necessary to renew the canes every year. A green pruning is recommended in May-June, in the form of bud removal.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March, May to June
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
