Description

The strawberry Gariguette produces large elongated fruits with firm and juicy flesh and excellent taste quality. It is a non-perpetual variety, but early and productive. Gariguette strawberries are ideal for making tarts and pastries and preparing preserves. Early and productive variety. It produces elongated fruits with very fragrant, firm and juicy flesh. It is a non-perpetual variety. Pair it with a perpetual variety like 'Mara des Bois' to extend your strawberry harvest throughout the summer!

Strawberries can be consumed in multiple ways: they can be eaten raw, with sugar, cream or sliced thinly and dried before being added to muesli or yogurt. If you have a bountiful harvest, consider making jams, sauces, pies, ice creams or sorbets. You can also freeze strawberries.

There are 3 categories of varieties:

- wild or perpetual strawberries, producing small fruits from June to October

- non-perpetual large-fruited varieties, flowering once a year in spring and producing very large fruits around June

- perpetual large-fruited varieties, flowering twice a year or continuously, producing large fruits from June to October

In fact, the wild strawberry or woodland strawberry, present in Roman times and the medieval period, was crossed in the 18th century with a species brought from Chile, resulting in the selection of different large-fruited varieties through successive breeding.

The Strawberry is a hardy perennial belonging to the Rosaceae family. This variety has a sturdy habit, with persistent trifoliate, ovate and dentate leaves. It produces small white flowers with a golden center that transform into large red fruits. Botanically speaking, strawberries are considered pseudocarps, with the achenes (seeds) appearing on the surface of the epidermis.

For harvesting, pick the fruits as they ripen, every 2 or 3 days ideally in the morning. Strawberries are delicate, so pick them with their calyx by pinching the stem 1 to 2 cm (0 to 1in) above it. The texture of the fruit is a good indicator of ripeness. It should be firm and yielding to the touch. Strawberries are rich in vitamins and minerals. They can cause urticating sensations for some individuals as they stimulate the release of histamine in the body.

Planting and care

The 'Gariguette' Strawberry appreciates rich, deep, and well-drained soils, slightly acidic. A few months before planting, loosen the soil and add a generous amount of well-rotted compost. If your soil is chalky, add turf and then provide a mulch made of acidic materials (pine needles or bark...). Remove weeds and rocks from the soil. Planting this variety is preferably done in autumn. Choose a sunny location. Strawberry plants are good companions for garlic, beans, lettuce, onions, leeks, thyme, and spinach. However, they do not appreciate the company of cabbages and other brassicas. Strawberry plants remain in place for 3 to 4 years.

In the ground: Space the plants 35 cm (14in) apart in all directions. Dig a hole, place the strawberry plant (the collar should be level with the ground) and cover with fine soil. Water thoroughly. If your soil is moist, plant the plants on mounds 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8in) high.

In a pot: Place a layer of gravel or clay balls at the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage. Fill the pot with a mixture of potting soil, garden soil, and compost. Place , cover with soil, and firm it down. Water thoroughly.

Regularly weed. Mulch around the plants in summer to maintain soil moisture. Install a protective netting before the fruits turn red to avoid sharing your harvest with birds... You can also place ashes or coffee grounds near the young plants to repel slugs and snails. Water regularly, especially in hot weather. In autumn, remove dry leaves.

Apply compost on the surface in spring. In cooler regions, install a tunnel in spring to protect the plants from spring frosts during flowering.

The plants need to be renewed every 3 or 4 years. This variety multiplies through adventive stolons, small creeping stems that naturally root in the soil, forming new plants. To avoid exhausting the mother plant, cut the stolons and replant them if desired.

Wait 4 years before replanting Strawberry plants in the same location.
