Description

The Prunus dulcis Texas is an American variety of almond tree that produces an abundance of soft-shelled almonds. In cultivation, the Texas almond tree is used as a pollinator. Almond trees are not self-fertile, meaning that their pollen cannot fertilize their own flowers, so it is necessary to plant your tree near another variety.

During the first two years after planting, the almond tree is sensitive to frost, but then it becomes quite hardy. However, cold weather makes its fruiting unpredictable because the flowers are very early. It is difficult to harvest almonds above the Lyon region. The almond tree thrives best in dry, rocky, and limestone soils, even in exposed locations.

In plant anatomy, the almond refers to the inside of the seed. The fruits of the Prunus dulcis are called almonds because only this part is consumed. The pulp that surrounds the stone is not edible. Enjoy not only the delicious fruit, but also the fragrant flowering that heralds spring.

Planting and care

Plant your Texas Almond preferably in autumn, if it is a replacement, avoid planting it in the same place as an old Almond tree. The production of almonds requires the proximity of another variety of Prunus dulcis. Remember that fences do not prevent pollinators from moving from one garden to another. Pruning is limited to a light thinning in winter to promote the formation of young shoots in spring. Remove dead wood and interlacing branches. In the first 3 or 4 years, you can be more severe and promote the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, resulting in a goblet-shaped habit, traditional in fruit tree cultivation. You can harvest your almonds fresh or dry, depending on your taste.
