Description

The Reinette Grise du Canada Apple is an old and vigorous variety. It has very good fertility and is hardy. From September, it produces large, firm, flat, and irregular fruits. The colour and appearance of the skin are uncommon: when ripe, it takes on beautiful cinnamon tones and becomes slightly rough. The flesh is white, fine, melting, juicy, and deliciously fragrant, with a balance between sweetness and acidity. It is a perfect apple for cooking and baking.

The family of Reinette Apples includes more than 50 varieties. While apple trees have been native to Europe since ancient times, the Canadian Reinette was first described in 1805 by Clavel. There is no precise data on its origin.

The Canadian Reinette Apple, a tree of strong vigour, has a semi-erect habit, giving it an elegant appearance that opens up with the load, providing the necessary aeration to fight against diseases. Its susceptibility to scab is low. It tends to take on a slightly weeping form after a few years.
Its foliage is composed of very large, ovate, slightly hairy leaves that are greenish-brown on top and whitish-green underneath, with deeply toothed edges.
It blooms in April, at the same time as Granny Smith, Queen of the Pippins, Idared and Golden Delicious, which make very good pollinators. Although self-fertile, the Canadian Reinette Apple will only have better fruiting if it is in the presence of other apple trees.
It bears fruit from September. It is recommended to harvest them at this time to consume them from December to March. The large, flat fruits have a cinnamon hue when ripe.

Reinette Grise du Canada apples are excellent for cooking, but they are also very good eaten fresh. They can, of course, be used in compotes, jams, pies, cakes, or as an accompaniment to savoury dishes.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny spot for your Reinette Grise du Canada Apple Tree. The soil can be slightly alkaline or acidic but not excessively so. Dig a wide planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (topsoil, compost) and a base fertiliser such as crushed horn. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake if necessary. Water abundantly, even in winter, and even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside of freezing periods. Container-grown plants can be planted year-round, except during periods of extreme heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potassium, during winter, which will improve fruiting. Watch out for potential aphid attacks during the season. A white felting due to a fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only keep harvested fruits. Store apples with the stem pointing downwards, on racks or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry, cool place, but frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple removal of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, creating a goblet shape, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some space in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
