Description

This pair of colourful cherry trees with bare roots brings together the varieties 'Bigarreau Napoleon', with red and yellow bicoloured fruits, and 'Pigeon Heart', whose cherries are a beautiful light red. Planted in the same garden, these two cherry trees bloom at the same time, from late March to mid-April, and they pollinate each other, guaranteeing a bountiful and colourful harvest in June. November is the best month of the year to plant bare root fruit trees.

This pair consists of:

- 1 x 'Bigarreau Napoleon' Cherry Tree: a vigorous variety, producing heart-shaped fruits with white and juicy flesh, and yellow skin tinged with red. They attract few birds. The flowering starts in late March and the harvest begins from early June. These cherries are excellent when prepared in syrup, eau-de-vie or in a clafoutis, for example.

- x1 'Heart of Pigeon' Cherry Tree: this vigorous variety produces large heart-shaped fruits, sweet, with firm and crunchy yellow flesh, slightly acidic, and with shiny light red skin. Harvest in June. The tree often exceeds 6m (20ft) in height and width.

Tagged separately, with bare roots.

The 'Bigarreau' Cherry Tree belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a deciduous tree of medium size, reaching 5 to 10m (16 to 33ft) in height at maturity. Hardy, it can withstand temperatures down to -20°C (1°F), while the flowers fear spring frosts and are damaged from -2°C (28.4°F). Its rounded habit offers a beautiful shaded space, very pleasant during the summer. Its alternate toothed leaves are shiny and dark green, then take on a lovely reddish hue in autumn before falling. Adapted to all regions of central Europe, the cherry tree can be planted on a short grass meadow, in the back of a flower bed or within an orchard. The cherries are rich in vitamin C, minerals and trace elements. Enjoy them right after picking or, if the harvest is abundant, use them to make pies, clafoutis, jams and preserves.

Very hardy in most regions of France, the Cherry Tree tolerates winter cold more easily than summer heat. The flowers can be damaged during spring frosts, so it is recommended to plant cherry trees in a sheltered position, facing west and protected from cold winds in regions that experience quite significant late frosts.

A fruit tree trained in a goblet shape does not have a central leader (vertical main stem), but branches radiating from its trunk. This particular shape allows for good penetration of sunlight and air into the branches, which promotes the development and ripening of the fruits, while limiting the development of diseases.

Planting and care

The cherry tree grows in all types of soil, acidic or chalky. It appreciates fresh, light soils and fears heavy and clayey soils. Choose a sunny exposure. In order to limit the risks of late frost on the flowers, it is recommended to plant the Cherry tree in a sheltered location, facing west and protected from cold winds in regions that experience spring frosts. Planting is preferably done in autumn. If you plant several trees, space them 4 to 5 m (13 to 16ft) apart for goblet-shaped plants.

Loosen the soil deeply, remove stones and unwanted weeds. Add some sand to improve drainage. Dig a hole 4 to 5 times the volume of the root ball. Make sure to separate the bottom soil and the topsoil. Mix crushed horn or well-rotted compost or potting soil with the bottom soil and pour this mixture into the planting hole. Install a stake. Place the root ball, cover with topsoil and firm it down. Water generously (about 10 L). Tie the stake to the plant, crossing the tie in the shape of an 8, without touching the trunk.

During cultivation, watering is not necessary except in case of high temperatures. Mulch the base to keep it cool in summer. Protect your harvest by installing, as desired, a bird net, aluminum foil or old CDs. In case of aphid attack, spray water mixed with black soap.

Care

Pruning instructions Cherry trees are pruned while they still have leaves, just after the harvest. This pruning should remain superficial and is often not necessary. Cutting large sections should be very occasional as it weakens the trees. The use of balm on the wounds will limit the flow of sap which weakens the subject. In late autumn, remove dead branches and those that cross inside, in order to allow air and light to circulate in the middle.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time July to September
Soil moisture Wet
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
