More information

A variety that produces very large fruits, particularly firm and resistant to splitting. The appetising colour when ripe is dark red and shiny. The harvest takes place in early June and the productivity is very regular - provided there is a nearby pollinator, as this variety is not self-fertile. Planting is preferably done in autumn.

Description

The Bigarreau Hâtif Delbard® 'Rivedel' cherry tree produces very large fruits with particularly firm flesh. The skin, dark red and shiny at ripeness, resists splitting. It is a very beautiful and appetising fruit, to be eaten fresh under the tree or in a fruit salad. It is grafted onto Maxma Delbard 60®, this vigorous rootstock allows it great adaptability to dry climates as well as all types of soil. The variety itself offers a well-regulated and quite abundant productivity, and the characteristics of the rootstock reinforce this quality. The very early harvest takes place from the beginning of June.

The Cherry Tree, Prunus avium, belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a medium-sized tree, reaching 5 to 10m (16 to 33ft) in height at maturity. Its rounded habit offers a beautiful shaded space, very pleasant during the summer. Its alternate toothed leaves are shiny and dark green, then take on a lovely reddish hue in autumn before falling. Cherries are rich in vitamin C, minerals and trace elements.

From the end of March the Bigarreau Hâtif Delbard cherry tree is covered with countless small self-sterile white flowers. In order for them to produce beautiful red and shiny fruits, the proximity of another compatible cherry tree is necessary. Delice de Malicorne and Bigarreau de Burlat, planted less than 30m (98ft) away, fulfill the role of pollinating variety very well. The harvest from this cherry tree remains quite regular, the phenomenon of alternation Ibiennial bearning) presented by some varieties being only very slightly perceptible. Fruit production becomes optimal after 5 or 6 years, a fairly rapid fruiting. Cherries should be picked when fully ripe, as they do not ripen further after harvest.

Hardy, cherry trees can withstand temperatures down to -20 °C, although the flowers are sensitive to spring frosts and are damaged from -2 °C. Adapted to most regions, cherry trees can be planted on a lawn, at the back of a bed, or in an orchard.

For transport reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipment. They are suitable for all common training sizes: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards and low standards - averything except for tall standards. If you would like more information or advice on training your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This fruit tree is delivered with a "ready-to-plant" root ball. At planting, the root ball should be planted as is. The biodegradable material that surrounds the root ball and preserves the rootlets will decompose on its own during the plant's growth. In this way, you ensure better establishment.

Planting and care

Easy to cultivate, cherry trees grow in all types of soil, acidic or alkaline. They appreciate moist, light soils and dislike heavy and clayey soils. Choose a sunny site. In order to limit the risks of late frost to the flowers, it is recommended to plant your cherry tree in a sheltered location, facing west and protected from cold winds in regions that experience spring frosts. Planting is preferably done in autumn. If you plant multiple trees, space them 4 to 5m (13 to 16ft) apart for grafted plants.

Loosen the soil deeply, remove stones and unwanted weeds. Add some sand to improve drainage. Dig a hole 4 to 5 times the volume of the root ball. Make sure to separate the subsoil from the topsoil. Mix crushed horn or well-rotted compost or potting soil with the subsoil and pour this mixture into the bottom of the planting hole. Install a stake. Place the root ball, cover with the topsoil, and firm it down. Water generously (about 10L).  Tie the stake to the plant, crossing the tie in a figure-eight shape without touching the trunk.

During cultivation watering is not necessary except in the case of high heat. Mulch at the base to keep it cool in summer. Protect your harvest by installing either a bird net, aluminum foil, or old CDs. In case of aphid attack, spray with soapy water.

Care

Pruning instructions Cherry trees are pruned in green, which means when they still have leaves, just after the harvest. This pruning should remain superficial and is often not necessary. Cutting large sections should be very occasional as it weakens the trees a lot. The use of mastic on wounds will limit the flow of gum that weakens the subject. In late autumn remove dead branches and those that cross over, in order to allow air and light to circulate in the middle of the tree.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year

Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
