Description

The Summit Sweet Cherry Tree is a variety that produces very large, sweet fruits with firm and crunchy flesh and bright red skin. Flowering starts at the end of March. To ensure good fruit set, it is recommended to plant this variety near a Napoleon, Van or Hedelfingen Sweet Cherry Tree, within a radius of 20 to 30 m. Planting is preferably done in autumn for harvesting starting in June.

The Summit Sweet Cherry Tree produces very large, sweet, juicy, and tasty fruits. The cherries, with their bright red skin, have firm and crunchy flesh. Enjoy them right after picking or, if the harvest is abundant, use them to make pies, clafoutis, jams, and preserves. Cherries are rich in vitamin C, minerals, and trace elements.

The Summit variety is originally from Canada. Starting from the end of March, the Summit Sweet Cherry Tree is covered with small white flowers that appear before the leaves. This variety is self-fertile, but for better pollination, it is recommended to plant it near Napoleon, Van or Hedelfingen varieties, within a radius of 20 to 30 m. The Summit variety is harvested starting in June. The harvest can be more or less abundant depending on the year and may exhibit an alternating pattern, allowing the tree to replenish its reserves. Fruit production becomes optimal after 6 to 7 years. Cherries should be picked when ripe, as they do not ripen further after harvest.

The Sweet Cherry Tree (Prunus avium) belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a medium-sized tree, reaching a height of 5 to 10 m at maturity. Hardy, it can withstand temperatures down to -20 °C, while the flowers are susceptible to spring frosts and are damaged at -2 °C. Its rounded habit provides a beautiful shaded space, which is very pleasant during summer. Its alternate, toothed leaves are shiny and dark green, then take on a lovely reddish hue in autumn before falling. Adapted to all regions of France, the Sweet Cherry Tree can be planted on a short grass meadow, at the back of a flower bed, or within an orchard.

Planting and care

Easy to grow, the Cherry tree grows in any type of soil, acidic or chalky. It appreciates moist, light soils and is sensitive to heavy and clayey soils. Choose a sunny exposure. In order to limit the risk of late frost on the flowers, it is recommended to plant the Cherry tree in a sheltered location, facing west and protected from cold winds in regions that experience spring frosts. Planting is preferably done in autumn. If you plant multiple trees, space them 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) apart for cup-shaped plants.

Loosen the soil deeply, remove stones and unwanted weeds. Add some sand to improve drainage. Dig a hole 4 to 5 times the volume of the root ball. Make sure to separate the bottom soil from the top soil. Mix crushed horn or well-rotted compost or potting soil with the bottom soil and pour this mixture into the planting hole. Install a stake. Place the root ball, cover with the top soil and firm it down. Water generously (about 10L). Attach the stake to the plant, crossing the tie in the shape of an 8, without touching the trunk.

During cultivation, watering is not necessary except in case of extreme heat. Mulch around the base to keep it cool in summer. Protect your harvest by installing either a bird net, aluminum foil or old CDs. In case of aphid attack, spray soapy water.

Care

Pruning instructions Cherry trees are pruned in green, that is to say when they still have leaves, just after the harvest. This pruning should remain superficial and is often not necessary. The cutting of large sections should be very occasional as it weakens the trees greatly. The use of gum on the wounds will limit the flow of sap that weakens the subject. In late autumn, remove dead branches and those that cross inside, so as to allow air and light to circulate in the middle.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time July to September
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
