Description

The 'Montmorency' sour cherry tree is an old variety, offering bright red-skinned fruits with juicy and acidic flesh. These Morello cherries are ideal for processing (jams, preserves, brandy). It is a self-fertile variety, not requiring association with another variety for pollination: perfect for small gardens! Flowering starts in April. Preferably plant in autumn for a harvest in June.

The 'Montmorency' Morello cherry tree produces juicy and tasty fruits, with a thin bright red skin and tender flesh, with colourless juice. The acidic flavor of Morello cherries is perfect for processing (jams, preserves, brandy). Cherries are rich in vitamin C, minerals, and trace elements.

The 'Montmorency' sour cherry tree is an old variety, originating from the Paris region. In April, 'Montmorency' Morello is covered with small white flowers that appear before the leaves. This variety is self-fertile and does not need to be associated with another variety for pollination. The 'Montmorency' sour cherry tree can be harvested from June. The harvest can be more or less abundant depending on the year and present an alternating phenomenon, allowing the tree to replenish its reserves. Fruit production becomes optimal after 6 to 7 years. Harvest 'Montmorency' cherries with the stem to improve their preservation. Cherries should be picked when ripe, as they do not ripen further after harvest.

The sour cherry tree (Prunus cerasus) belongs to the Rosaceae family, like the Sweet cherry tree (Prunus avium). The Cherry tree is a tall shrub, reaching 4 to 5 m in height at maturity. Hardy, it can withstand temperatures down to -20 °C while the flowers fear spring frosts and are damaged from -2 °C. Its fairly spreading habit provides a beautiful shaded space, very pleasant during summer. Its alternate toothed leaves are shiny and dark green, then take on a lovely reddish hue in autumn before falling. Adapted to all regions of continental Europe, the Cherry tree can be planted on a short grass meadow, at the back of a flower bed, or within an orchard.

Planting and care

Easy to grow, the Cherry tree grows in any type of soil, acidic or chalky. It appreciates moist and light soils, and dislikes heavy and clayey soils. Choose a sunny location. To limit the risk of late frost on the flowers, it is recommended to plant the Cherry tree in a sheltered position, facing west and protected from cold winds in regions that experience spring frost. Planting is preferably done in autumn. If you plant multiple trees, space them 4 to 5 metres (13 to 16 feet) apart for cup-shaped plants.

Loosen the soil deeply, remove rocks and weeds. Add some sand to improve drainage. Dig a hole 4 to 5 times the volume of the root ball. Make sure to separate the bottom soil from the topsoil. Mix crushed horn or well-rotted compost or potting soil with the bottom soil and pour this mixture into the planting hole. Install a stake. Place the root ball, cover with the topsoil and firm it down. Water generously (about 10L). Attach the stake to the plant, crossing the tie in the shape of an 8, without touching the trunk.

During cultivation, watering is not necessary except in hot weather. Mulch at the base to keep it cool in summer. Protect your harvest by installing either a bird net, aluminum foil or old CDs. In case of aphid attack, spray with soapy water.

Care

Pruning instructions Cherry trees are pruned when they still have leaves, just after the harvest. This pruning should remain superficial and is often not necessary. Cutting large sections should be very rare as it weakens the trees. Using sealant on the wounds will limit the flow of gum that weakens the subject. At the end of autumn, remove dead branches and those that cross inside the canopy, in order to allow air and light to circulate in the middle.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time July to September
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
