I was very disappointed when planting this dwarf nectarine tree. Despite the substantial 6L pot, upon unpacking, I was dismayed to discover that it was a rather mature plant recently repotted, with the roots cut 15 cm from the collar. Only the stumps of large roots remain, with no other roots, no root ball. I sent an email with photos of the plant, and Promesse de Fleurs customer service offered a partial refund (I suppose I am left with half a plant...). I am still waiting for them to offer a new shipment of a younger plant with proper roots and real potential for growth. Sincerely

Description

The Garden Beauty® Dwarf Nectarine Tree is a self-fertile variety. A slow-growing dwarf tree, it is perfectly suited for pot cultivation and small gardens. It produces yellow-fleshed nectarines. The fruits are round, yellow with a red blush, and as large as traditional nectarines. Their flesh is yellow, juicy, and sweet. Harvest takes place in late August and early September when the fruits reach ripeness. This variety is cold-resistant and requires little maintenance, with light pruning being sufficient. The flowering is double, red, and highly decorative. Nectarines are distinguished from peaches by the adhesion of the flesh to the stone.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach, which was originally thought to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. The nectarine is a natural mutation of the peach that is believed to have occurred in the 16th century. The Garden Beauty® Dwarf Nectarine Tree is a recent variety, an American mutation of the original Asian peach, obtained in the USA.

Like many fruit trees, the Garden Beauty® Dwarf Nectarine Tree appreciates light, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils. It is a low-vigor tree, suitable for pot cultivation and small gardens. Its spreading habit indicates a tree with numerous horizontally growing branches. Its deciduous foliage is bright green and emits a slight almond scent. The leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in width, with short necks.
Its magnificent flowering, in a beautiful red colour, occurs in late March. This makes it suitable for cultivation in northern regions, but it should still be placed in a sunny and wind-protected location. The flowers are hermaphroditic, double, red, and self-fertile.
Fruiting results in yellow fruits with a blush of red, ready to be harvested from late August. This tree does not require too much maintenance. It tolerates severe pruning, but not every year.

Nectarines can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savory, flambéed, frozen, or thawed. They pair well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, including jams, compotes, pastries, and more.

Planting and care

The Garden Beauty® Dwarf Nectarine Tree is preferably planted from September to November. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, to moisten the entire root ball by capillarity. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with a mixture of soil and potting soil. Gently tamp around the base of the tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

The Garden Beauty® Dwarf Nectarine Tree has a semi-pivot root system. It thrives in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-drained soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first training pruning will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will form the tree's framework (about 5 branches). Fruits appear on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For the fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the center that are crossing each other and shorten the longer ones that grow outward in order to maintain a harmonious shape.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time January to February, December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
