Description

The 'Mesembrine' Nectarine is a self-fertile, vigorous, and highly productive variety. It produces flat nectarines with yellow flesh, fine texture, juicy, fragrant, and sweet. The fruits are large, about 8 cm (3in) in diameter, with dark red skin on a yellow-orange background. Harvesting takes place when they are fully ripe from late August to mid-September. It is a variety with strong vigour and good resistance to diseases.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach, which was thought to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms are native to northern China. The Nectarine is a natural mutation of the peach that is believed to have occurred in the 16th century.

Like many fruit trees, the 'Mesembrine' Nectarine prefers light, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy, compact soils. It is a tree with very good vigour, high productivity, and hardy down to -15°C (5°F). Its semi-erect habit produces a tall trunk with many vertically growing branches, giving it an elegant appearance.

Its deciduous foliage is bright green and has a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in width, with a short petiole. Its white-pink flowering occurs in March. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. Choose a sunny and sheltered location for it, protected from the wind. The fruiting results in flat, large-caliber, red fruits, ready to be harvested from mid-August. This tree does not require too much maintenance. It tolerates severe pruning, but not every year.

Nectarines can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, salty, flambéed, chilled, or defrosted. They pair well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They are found in many recipes, especially for jams, compotes, and pastries.

For transport reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipment. They are suitable for all common training sizes: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards, and low standards, except for high standards. If you would like more information or advice on training your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This fruit tree is delivered in a "ready-to-plant" root ball. During planting, the root ball should be planted as it is. The biodegradable wrap that surrounds the root ball and preserves the rootlets will decompose naturally during the plant's growth. By doing so, you ensure better establishment.

Planting and care

The 'Mesembrine' Nectarine is preferably planted from September to November. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, in order to moisten the entire root ball by capillary action. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with soil mixed with potting soil. Gently tamp around the base of the fruit tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

The 'Mesembrine' Nectarine has a semi-taproot system. It will thrive in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first pruning for training will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will form the tree's framework (around 5 branches). The fruits appear on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruits will not reproduce. When pruning for fruiting, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the centre that intersect and shorten the longest ones that go outward in order to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time January to February, December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
